We will meet this Friday, June 14th at the YMCA. Our presenter will be Deb Ellingsen Executive Director of the Women's Care Center. Gus Olson, our Outbound Exchange Student to Thailand will tell us about his plans. Duties will be: Invocation - Mark, Greeter - Judy Rogers, Fellowship - Hugo Hietapelto.
Jim Curtis made a generous offer to encourage members to get fit and to raise up to $1,000 for the Club. Just attend a class this week at Crossfit Aerial, 316 Garfield Ave and let them know that you are a Rotarian. Jim is one of three Club members who are already active there. Today was the June Board meeting. We are looking at the Clyde for the Changing of the Guard. Date and Time TBD. We are recruiting for the Peach Committee. Tim is talking to the peach lady in Washington State. The project requests just keep coming in. The Hermantown Baseball Association can use some help. We moved the Huskies game concessions support from Father's Day to Monday the 17th. Arrive at the Wade at 5:15 and work until the game is over. Just need 2-4 more folks. We will exceed our 50 projects in our 50th year goal. We can all be very proud of the effort that it took to meet that very ambitious goal. Alex and Kadie will visit the Superior and Downtown Clubs this week to request support for restarting the Twin Ports Rotaract Club. The Twin Ports should have a college age and young professionals Club. Alex and Katie are going to make that happen with help from the Clubs, the colleges and universities, and motivated Rotarians.
Guests at our meeting last week were: Our speaker Haley Hedstrom CEO of the Lake Superior Zoo, Logan Thoreson from the YMCA and Guest of Alex, Our little buddies Vinny and Colton Suihkonen, Chelsea and Clara Leutgeb guests of Tim.
Jim Lewis introduced our speaker Haley Hedstrom. Haley came to the Zoo in 2018 as the Marketing Director. In 2021 the Zoo had a record 100,000 visitors. There is a plan to reinvest $1.2M in the Zoo. 20% of the Zoo's operating budget comes from the Tourism Fund. No surprise that the bears; Tundra and Banks are the favorite attractions. There is a Zoo school for pre-school kids where they work with 3-500 kids per year. There is a Zoomobile that visits schools and nursing homes. There is a new pavilion space that can be rented and opportunities for after hours private events. There are two upcoming fundraisers; the Zoolapalooza on July 30th and a golf scramble at Black Bear on September 21st. Thank you Jim for bringing this program to us and for the work that you are doing as President of the Zoo Board.
Kay Biga mentioned that there will be another Rotary evening at the Duluth Playhouse in September. It will be the dress rehersal before the opening of the "The Jersey Boys", the Tony award winning musical about the Four Seasons. I might have to sing along.
June is Rotary International Fellowships Month.
