Last Friday we met to select Proctor High School Scholarship recipients in preparation for their awards ceremony. Alex, our Youth Services Chair, will attend the ceremony and award the scholarships. 

 

Tomorrow May 1st there will be a Dragon Boat Festival Committee Meeting at 5:00 at Bent Paddle. 

 

Kadie Knudson will attend our meeting this week. Kadie was the last Twin Ports Rotaract Club President. She now works at Glensheen and is eager to restart the Rotaract Club. Skyline and the other Twin Ports Clubs need to jump in and help. 

 

Next week May 10th the Student Rotarians will run our meeting. Always a fun meeting. Perfect for celebrating the month of May as Youth Services month. Following the meeting if the weather cooperates we will do our Spring Highway Cleanup. We meet in the parking lot of Terry's Auto Body at 5132 Rice Lake Road. We have bags, pickers, and vests. I recently read that the most common roadside trash item was cigarette butts. I agree.  

 

Guests last week were; Dan Dock, our speaker Jerry Thoreson, and Proctor High School Student Rotarian Lucy Mistelske.

 

President Tim introduced Jerry Thoreson who is the General Manager of Destination Duluth. Jerry and Tim both participated in this year's Leadership Duluth Class and Jerry is a Downtown Rotarian. The theme for Destination Duluth is that a picture is worth a thousand people. The change in the phrase from words to people reflects the mission of Destination Duluth to encourage tourism, business, and population growth. The group was started by Brandon Robinson who was a Marshall School graduate and is now a Downtown Rotarian. Destination Duluth is the Minnesota Cities leader in social media likes, and the third nationally. Jerry says that great photography captures emotions. He showed examples of the photos on their site showing the natural and built beauty that make Duluth the place that we love to live and that others envy. destinationduluth.org  

   

May is Rotary International Youth Services Month. Youth bring energy and enthusiasm to our Clubs. Rotary provides many opportunities for youth including Student Rotarians, Youth Exchange, Scholarships, The 4-Way Essay Contest, Interact and Rotaract, and many more.
