Last week's guest was Colton Suihkonen, and we were pleased to see Kent Oliver. Our speakers were Dr. Tom Morgan and Phil Anderson speaking on Setting Sail to End Nuclear Weapons. Our speakers were veterans who are now committed to Veterans for Peace. As Rotarians know and they said, " Peace is a lot more than the absence of war". We understand that all of our international service projects including polio inoculations are peace making.
Dr. Tom told the story of the Golden Rule, a 34 foot sailboat which attempted to sail to the Marshall Islands to oppose nuclear weapons testing. The boat was restored by Veterans for Peace  and since 2015 has been sailing to promote abolition of nuclear weapons. The boat and crew is now on an 11,000 mile, 15 month tour. Phil described a number of nuclear explosion doomsday scenarios and talked about the enormous cost to the military budget to maintain and update our nuclear weapons that can never be used. "....the way to make sure [nuclear war] never starts is to abolish the dangerous costly nuclear stockpiles which imprison mankind." Gen. Omar Bradley
Even though at the end of the Cold war there were 75,000 nuclear weapons in the world and there are now 13,500 we are currently closer than we have ever been to nuclear war. Rotarians need to continue to work for peace.
