We will meet this Friday, December 8th at the YMCA. This meeting will be the Holiday auction to support purchasing presents for a local Holiday family. Bring wrapped gifts in the $25-$35 range to be auctioned by Joe and Rob. This is always a fun meeting. We will be visited by members of the Superior Dragon Boat Leadership Team. There will be no Duties this week to leave plenty of time for the auction.
Our outgoing exchange student Jo Johnson from Proctor High School has all of her documents signed and sent in to the District. The Club needs to identify a Youth Exchange Officer. If you are willing to be the YEO please contact Mark, and he will send the necessary form to you. It will be really exciting to be able to stay in contact with Jo by Zoom through her exchange year.
Last week Luke Matthews joined us by Zoom and had an unhappy buck story being the buck that he hit on a recent drive to the Cities. He requested a ride from Marshall School to this Friday's meeting as his car is in the shop. Please call him at 715-292-4883.
Our guests last week were; From Proctor High School Counselor Jim Vos, and students Cameron Pease and Santiago Lenz, From Eco Rotary Club Jill Baum and Emma Pardini, From Hermantown High School student Noah Blomquist, Dan Dock from Downtown, and our speaker Mindy Granley.
Our program was presented by Mindy Granley, Sustainability Supervisor for the City of Duluth. Mindy was in a similar position at UMD for 12 years. At the City she was fortunate to start with a couple of plans already in place. She focuses her responsibilities on both City Department Operations and Community-wide planning and projects. Her planning efforts include preparing for a future in Duluth that will be, "warmer, wetter, and weirder" meaning climate change. Mindy has helped to bring $42M in grants to the City from Federal and State goverments, Foundations, and non-profits to support environmental projects that include solar power mounted of the caps over water reservoirs, a new transformer and backup power for our water plant, recovered waste heat from the sanitary sewer system for heating houses. Mindy finished with some suggestions for environmental projects for the Club to consider. The City is in good hands from an environmental standpoint with Mindy at the helm.
December will be a busy month. Refer to the Club calendar. 12/12 is the December Board Meeting, 12/12 and 13 are Bell Ringing, 12/15 will be holiday family present shopping at 8:00 at Hermantown WalMart and gift wrapping at noon at the YMCA. 12/19 is both the Life House Holiday Dinner (Skyline provides cookies) and Bentleyville volunteering. There will be no meeting on 12/29.
Chris Sward sent an update on Sport Disciple. They were operating in Haiti, but it became too dangerous to be there. They moved operations and focus to the Dominican Republic where they are looking for help to purchase a van. Perhaps we can help.
December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month.
