Today was our March Board Meeting. The RYLA program now has 55 applicants, well on its way to the 80-90 optimum number of campers and way ahead of last year's efforts. Applications are due to the District at the end of the month. We have online scholarship applications already and they are due April 17th. Open dates for speakers are the month of April. We had a good discussion about supporting the Guatemalan City of Santa Maria de Jesus. Our response looks like it will be in two phases; an immediate needs "pass the hat" effort followed by a World Community Service grant application supporting Skyline for matching by other Twin Ports Clubs.
Guests at last week's meeting were: Frances Wittenberg Communications Director Hermantown Area Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Rotarian Dan Dock, our presenter and Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa, and Duluth Police Mattie Hjelseth.
Chief Ceynowa told us that he grew up in Lincoln Park. He has been in the Department for 20 years including the last 3 as Chief. The Chief talked about the Code 4 bus that the Department uses to do their 120 community engagement projects each year. They are hoping to replace it soon. The DPD is the 3rd largest in the State with 155 officers and a total staff of 200. The Department now has 2 drones to help on scenes and in pursuits like the recent jewelry store robbery. The Chief mentioned that the Duluth community is actively supporting the Department and that there were 160 ride alongs last year. Minnesota's new law enforcement slogan is "We work with you and for you". Thank you to David for bringing the DPD Chief to speak with us.
The Build North Expo starts on Thursday at the Duluth Heritage Center. Skyline is volunteering to be ticket takers and greeters Thursday through Saturday. There are just 2 slots left open on Friday from 4-9 PM. Let Mark know if you are available. We have 10 free passes available to attend the show which runs Thursday 4-8 PM, Friday 12-9 PM and Saturday 9 AM-6 PM. Check with Mark for tickets.
Our March 20th meeting will be a Bring a Guest Day. We will adjust the meeting routine to engage the guests.
March is Rotary International Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Month.
