This evening Tuesday, April 4th at 5:30 we will have a joint Superior and Skyline Dragonboat Festival kickoff meeting at Barker's Island Inn restaurant on their upper deck area. All Skyline members are invited. This will be a chance to meet the Superior Club members who will be heading up committees and working on the Festival. Last week we learned that the 23rd Veteran is a charitable partner in the Festival and Charlie Johnson scheduled Mike Waldron from the group to speak to our Club on Friday, April 28th.

Skyline Board meeting is Tuesday, April 11th at noon at Bent Paddle. Lunch will be served. This will be an in-person and Zoom meeting.

Tom Meyer is working on a design for a Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab public area collection box. When he has it designed we will build it. Thanks Tom for taking the lead on this.

Guests at last week's meeting were; Dan Dock, Alex Schult guest of Kevin Kalligher.
Tim introduced our speaker, John Magas, Superintendent of Duluth Public Schools. The Superintendent told us that there are 8,000 students in the District. He grew up in a tiny town, Shelter Bay, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He followed a non traditional path first teaching English in Mexico, and on a reservation in Yakima, Washington, and finally in special education, before becoming a principal in Appleton, WI. He believes in the "servant leadership" model, and that learning and growth comes most from your mistakes. He talked about his strategic plan for the District and the need to get buy in from the School Board. He spoke about the challenges ahead including the only 40% graduation rate for black and native american students. He hopes to grow students financial literacy and encourage career paths. He talked about safety in schools as being primarily about building relationships, focusing on social/emotional learning, and having enough mental health help locally available. His contract was recently extended for another three years.

There will be a barbeque celebration of the Outlaw Bridge hosted by the Port Arthur Club on Saturday, July 1st held in Grand Portage. See the link below from Lake Superior Magazine for the history of the bridge built by Port Arthur and Duluth Rotarians. Road trip?
