This Friday 5/30 we will meet at the YMCA at 11:00 on the west side of the building. We will stain the kiddo picnic tables that we built last year. We will stop for a picnic lunch, and hope to be done by 1:00. We will have the stain and some painting gear, but bring your favorite brush, roller, or sprayer and wear your painting clothes. No Duties this week.
This Friday evening is Teen Night at the Y from 5:30-8:30. We will scope it out and plan to participate more fully in the future.
Last week our guests were Emmy Lewis and Arlo Leutgeb (it is nice to have our kids join us), Dan Dock, and Brian Trettel.
Tim brought Peach sale posters and fliers with QR codes that link to our online sales. Emily tested the QR Code and ordered this year's first online lug of peaches. Peaches arrive for sale on Friday, August 15th. Greg circulated a sign up sheet for this year's Air Show set up on July 3rd.
Our newest member, Emily Ranta, along with Brian Trettel presented our program. Emily is the Branch Executive Director of the Essentia Wellness Center YMCA. Emily grew up in Stillwater and went to UMD for an Exercise Science degree. Her connection to the Y started working at Camp Widjiwagan and then in Kansas. She, her husband, and daughter moved to Duluth, and she started working at the Downtown Y until the the new Y on the hill opened. She told us how the Y and Rotary are similar as long established international organizations whose mission is youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Y is an integral part of a healthy community. The Northern Association includes the Essentia Y, Downtown, Superior, Cook County, and Camp Miller. The Y provides $250K of assistance to families and seniors. Brian is in charge of and told us about the Block Party. It is a thank you to the community and just happens to fall on his birthday. Kevin sent out a sign up list for volunteers.
Our Outbound exchange student, Gus Olson, will be back from Thailand on June 3rd and will come to our meeting on on the 6th. He will be our program on June 27th.
We are in touch with Ashley Adkins, the Director of the Early Childhood Development Center at the Y about scheduling this year's planting of the Kids Garden.
Just heard about the potential for a big industrial development in Hermantown west of Midway Road headed by Mortenson Construction. Interesting.
May is Rotary International Youth Services Month.
