This week we will join our virtual District Conference to hear RI President Holger Knaack speak on "Celebrate Diversity". We will skip duties this week as the program will run from noon to 1:00. Following the meeting Chris Sward has scheduled tee times starting at 2:30 at Nemadji. Weather prediction is for sunny and 54 degrees.
Our District Conference is running all this week. You can still sign up for free and sit in on sessions. For folks new to Rotary I strongly suggest tuning in on Thursday at noon to hear District Trainer, Patty Baltz, present on, "Rotary Basics: Things you didn't even know you didn't know".
Next week, Friday May 7, we will be building the disc golf course at the Boys and Girls Club camp on Island Lake. Our brief lunch meeting will be by Zoom too. We will work, and have lunch there. Plan for working from noon to 4:00. Greg will have maps and details following a site visit this Thursday. Please plan to come dressed for outdoor work.
The Superior Rotary Club is holding their Craft Beer & Wine Event Online Auction Starting next Monday April 26th through Sunday May 2nd. Russ reported that scholarship applications are due from Proctor, Marshall, and Hermantown schools on April 24th after which students will be interviewed and winners selected for $1000 scholarships.
We were glad to see PP Marisa last week. Lisa Neitzel told us about activities with the District Communication Committee, and Mark gave an update on the status of the HealthCare Center in Nigeria grant application.
Guests last week were our speaker Dan Hartman, and Bernard Stack who was a German exchange student.
Last week's presentation was by Dan Hartman, Director of Glensheen. Dan focused on how Glensheen was a Duluth asset. Though Glensheen is owned by UMD the operations costs are solely funded by ticket sales which have grown from $600,000 in 2013 to $1.8M in 2018. DAN talked about the new family friendly tours that include a, "Treasure Book" for the kids to find a treasure in each room they visit. There are free Wednesday night events like Concerts on the Pier, bonfires, and shark watching. There is now a coffee shop, ice cream stand, and bar on the grounds called the Shark on the Lake Bar. Glensheen has evolved under Dan's direction to be a regular stop for Duluthians and not just for tourists. Thank you Dan.
