This Friday 4/11 we will meet at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum 902 E 1st Street at noon. Lunch will be served. There will be no Duties. Our Program will be by Matthew Sjelin the Museum Director. The current exhibit is of rare manuscripts from clasical legends like Victor Herbert, Beethoven, and Chopin.
At the April Board meeting today we discussed the opportunities to work with the YMCA that came from our meeting with Jeramy Katchuba and Emily Ranta. Our biggest opportunity to collaborate is on the Block Party on July 17 during Hermantown Days. Looks like a great opportunity to significantly increase our visibility in the Hermantown community. There are also a number of other joint project opportunities. We will hear more when Emily is our program in May. We have some Spring projects coming up including Highway Cleanup Friday May 16th. Changing of the Guard will be on Tuesday July 1st with details to be determined.
We have an opening on the Board for the Club Service position. Club Service organizes our social gatherings like picnics, golf outings, dinners, and other fun events. Please let Adam know if you are interested.
Guests last week were: Our speaker Neal Ronquist, Downtown Rotarian Dan Dock, Skyline PP Harry Podgorski, and Clara daughter of Tim. This was the first meeting attended by Emily Ranta as the YMCA representative member in the Club.
Lisa introduced our speaker Neal Ronquist. Neal's wife Renae works with Lisa. Neal is the Group Publisher of the Duluth News Tribune. Neal has spent his 35 year career in newspapers from Minnesota to North Carolina to Arkansas to Indiana and Michigan. Neal talked about the history of news from the earliest printing presses to our current high technology social media delivery of the news. With the change in news delivery also came the change in the funding model. Local advertising used to fund newspapers, but now highly targeted social media advertising precludes local advertising and so the cost of local newspapers has risen. The DNT is part of a larger family owned newspaper group headquartered in North Dakota. Neal said the the owners are hands off on what is published on the editorial page which has a 3 person Board. Great program!
Tom told us that the Duluth District Conference will be held October 24-26 and that the Friday night opening dinner will be held at the Depot.
April is Rotary International Environment Month.
