Our Board met today and started with a discussion about assisting the Superior Club with their Dragon Boat Festival. We will discuss this further at our next Club meeting. We also talked about Board succession, current Club bank accounts status, new project ideas, RYLA and scholarships for students, the June 2nd 50 year celebration picnic, new member recruitment, and upcoming meeting program planning.  

 

Last week our guests were Colton Suihkonen, Chris Salgy, Alex Shult, visiting Rotarian Bob MacLean from Harbortown, and our speaker Wayne Whitwam. We love having guests.

Bob MacLean received a check from Skyline to support the "The Brain Game" project which is a project spearheaded by the LaCrosse, WI Rotary Club to get motivational books in the hands of new parents. Garret shared the results from a letter he received from the Salvation Army saying our holiday bell ringing efforts netted $556. Good job Skyliners! We received a thank you letter for our gift to support Sport Disciple's efforts in Haiti. We all know how grim the situation is in Haiti and their efforts now are just to provide food to the people who are local to their facility. We wish that we could do more, but the civil unrest won't allow it for now. "Sport Disciple strives to create a new generation of young adults who will end the cycle of poverty and lead their communities into the future". 

Our speaker was the Hermantown Schools Superintendent Wayne Whitwam. He thanked the Club for the work on the ECFE playground stage and commented on how much it is used and enjoyed by the kids. Wayne spoke about current state legislative bills being considered that will impact Hermantown schools such as free lunches for all students, expanded unemployment time for non teacher positions, and expanded medical leave. His concerns were primarily that details for these bills be worked out before they are passed as they will have different impact on Districts. There will be a day at the Capitol on the 28th for regional superintendents to hopefully work with legislators to modify legislation as needed. Next he spoke about the $10M bond referendum passed by the City to fund a new hockey arena. The arena is needed for ice time for kids and girls programs that currently don't have enough time. The suggested location for the arena is where the current District Administration building is located. The current Administration building started its life as a meat locker and could easily justify being replaced. Finally he spoke about open enrollment and the history of the limits to access because the building are already at capacity. There is some discussion about adding another elementary school building. Following the meeting we spoke about scheduling a meeting with the school counselors to discuss a higher level of involvement by the schools in Skyline activities for students.        

 

February is Rotary Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month.
