The Dragon Boat will be at Ursa Minor Brewing 2415 W. Superior St. tonight Tuesday from 4:30 - 6:30 to generate PR for the Festival. Come talk about the Festival and Rotary.
Our Outbound Exchange Student, Gus Olson, told us that he will be flying out of MSP to Bangkok, Thailand this Wednesday, August 14th at 11:30. What an amazing adventure he will have. The Club will provide a stipend for the nine months that Gus will be there.
Dragon Boat Festival set up is Friday, August 23rd so there won't be a regular lunch meeting that day. The Festival starts friday afternoon into the evening with music and a team parade. More on the schedule of events to come.
Our guests last week were: form Club 25 Dan Dock, Susan Meyer guest of Tom, Dr. Bob from Superior, Fred Rouse from Harbortown, and our presenter Tony Dierckins.
Tony Dierckins is the author of eight books and the founder of Zenith City Press which promotes his books that are primarily about the history of the Twin Ports. He came to speak about his newest book, "Twin Ports Trains - The Historic Railroads of Duluth & Superior". Tony told us about how the 20 early railroads shaped the population growth, economy and even the physical landscape of the Twin Ports. The early decision by Jay Cooke to route his trains to Duluth instead of Superior has had a lasting impact on the economies and growth of the two cities. We learned how Jay Cooke's relationaships with banks in England helped to finance the Civil War and then his overinvesting in Duluth's economic development and the first "Great Depression of 1873" led to his bankrupcy. The completion of the first train from St. Paul to Duluth reduced travel time by stagecoach of two weeks to just a few hours. Facinating history of our region by a wonderful author and speaker.
Last week PDG Kay Biga organized a meeting of the Twin Ports Rotary Clubs. The purpose was to discuss Opportunities to Work Together. The agenda included supporting the Twin Ports Rotaract Club, Interact at Denfeld, Recital for a Cause, Joint Service Projects Large and Small, Rotary Night at the Playhouse, District Conference 2026 in Duluth, Paul Harris Dinner, International Projects, and a Membership Campaign. Collaboration between the Clubs will advance all of our Clubs.
PDG Kay Biga mentioned that there will be another Rotary evening at the Duluth Playhouse on September 12th. It will be the dress rehersal before the opening of "Jersey Boys", the Tony award winning musical about Franki Valli and the Four Seasons.
August is Rotary International Membership and New Club Developmentternal Month. Twin Ports Community based Rotaract will be a "new" Club.
