The Twin Ports Inter-Club Council is a concept new to Duluth and Superior. So far participation, and cooperation have been great and the upcoming group efforts show much promise.
The District Conference is now just a week away. District leaders will meet on Thursday at Cragun's and the Conference will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Remember, no regular Friday meeting for Skyline on Friday 10/2.
Guests last week were; Our presenter Patrick Miner, and Downtown Rotarian Dan Dock.
Patrick Miner is the President of Miner's Inc which is headquartered in Hermantown and includes Super One Foods, Super One Liquor, Woodland Marketplace Foods, and Miner's Ace Hardware. They have locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Miner's was started in 1943 with a small store in Grand Rapids owned by Patrick's Grandfather. There are now four generations of Miner's in the business. In the 70s was when Miner's realized that they need to become superstores in order to be able to compete and that is where the name Super One came from. Their ability to do purchasing on a national level is what allows them to stay cost competitive. Over the years as the number of their stores increased so did the size of the West Duluth warehouse to its current 200,000 square feet. By 2018 they had 2700 employees in 30 stores. There are 80 people employed in the Hermantown Headquarters. This is a great success story for a family-owned business in Hermantown. Thank you to Patrick for speaking with us and to Greg for arranging the program.
Please sign-up for a November 12 cooking class and dinner at Duluth Grille that will be a Skyline Social.
This is the first year that Harbortown is selling Roses. They are $25/dozen. Pick up is Friday, October 16 9-6PM at Mount Royal, Miller Hill and West Duluth Super Ones and Saturday from 10-2:00 at Mount Royal.
September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month.
