This Friday, September 29th we will meet at Lester River Park to have lunch and help to set up the Lester River Rendezvous.
There will be no Duties. Lindsey says that we will be measuring and spray painting lines on the field, putting up sponsorship signs (including ours), moving and placing pumpkins, hay bales, and corn stalks throughout the park. Wear casual clothes and dry shoes/boots.
After last week's meeting an intrepid group of three got 3/4 of the Fall Highway Cleanup done. Just the northern most part is left to do.
Wednesday, October 4th at 5:30 we will meet at Second Harvest 4503 Airpark Blvd to fill weekend backpacks for kids who may not have food otherwise on the weekend.
Friday, October 6th District Governor Dave Long from Detroit Lakes will make his annual visit to our Club. Our Board will meet with him at 11:00 at the YMCA before our regular Friday meeting where he will be the presenter. This will be our October Board meeting. Please plan to attend the meeting. District Governors visit all 63 Clubs in-person. It is an enormous task. We want to be respectful of his presentation time so we will limit duties and announcements.
Our guests at last week's meeting were Club 25er Dan Dock, Superior Rotarian (soon to be Skyline Rotarian) Luke Matthews, Chelsea Leutgeb guest of Tim, and our speaker Rachel Ashford.
Rachel is the owner of Northbrook Counseling and Consulting with offices in Duluth and Ashland. She is a graduate of St. Olaf and earned her masters degree in social work from Washington University in St. Louis. She has been in practice for 13 years. The purpose of Rachel's presentation was to help us to better understand the topic of mental health in order to follow the direction requested by RI President Gordon McInally to erase the stigma associated with addressing mental health, to raise awareness about mental health needs, and to work to improve access to mental health services.
Rachel told us that mental illness is very common andn it is getting worse. Mental illness is a leading disability. Depression is prevelant in high performance people who don't ask for help. Mental health and physical healthare interconnected. When interacting with someone having mental health issues be brave enough to have the conversatio. Show kindness and curiousity. Listen and don't try to fix the problem.
There are mental health programs for kids at the Boys and Girls Club, and at Northwoods. Kids ned help now. Mental health is health care. Thank you to Rachel for her presentation.
Russ is working on details for a "Trunk or Treat" event at the YMCA for the kids. MEA is October 20th so kids are out of school. The idea would be for Skyliners to hand out candy (from the trunk of our cars) to the kids in the ECFE program. Maybe Trish can set us up with some costumes.
September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month. A good month for our new Board Youth Services duo Alex and Emily to connect with our schools.
