We will meet at the YMCA this Friday the 4th, and it will be a hybrid meeting. This will be a Club Assembly where we will walk through an RI document called, Club Health Check. This document should help our newer members to learn about Rotary and prompt discussions about what our Club is doing well and what we can do better. We will also review how to login to Skyline's Clubrunner and RI's My Rotary so that we can look at RI's Learning Center. A copy of Club Health Check and instructions for logging into Clubrunner and My Rotary will follow the sending of this Skyliner. Please review before the meeting on Friday if you have time.
We will induct Crystal Bowen, Member Experience Director at the YMCA, as our newest member. Duties this week are: Invocation - Bob Sherman and Fellowship - Tom Meyer. Tom will be busy this week as he has volunteered as PP to run the meeting, AND he will be providing the food. The YMCA now requires masks. We all want to be safe.
What a great meeting last week! Thank you to Bob Sherman for arranging the presentation and tour by the St. Louis County Rescue. Mark promises that we will do no more offsite meetings without his sending out a correct map. Sorry.
Rick Slatten comes by his leadership of the St. Louis County Rescue honestly; his father started it in 1958 and 1976 was Rick's first search. They are 95 well trained, experienced, and equipped volunteers who are ready to search for and rescue our loved ones anywhere in the County. They also help to find and catch those folks who have broken the law and take to the woods to hide. Technology is their friend as Rick stated that, "Searches are solved by data". They use lots of technology to gather the data; drones, infrared cameras, mapping, mini submarines, sonar, pinging of cellphones, and more, but they also use search dogs just as effectively. On the tour of their garage we saw command center vehicles, water and swamp rescue boats, and ATVs.
When asked, why do the volunteers donate their time and take risks, Rick's response was, "We give people meaning in their lives." We will be in further discussion with Rick about participating in Rock the Skyline.
The Tri-District Conference has been cancelled due to Covid. What a shame for the committee who has been planning and working for a year and a half. It is a lost opportunity to learn about Rotary and to meet Rotarians from all over Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Ontario. DG Keith and the training committee will put together a virtual conference similar to last year's.
We just learned that Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is planned for this summer. This is a life changing experience for youth from our District. Skyline has regularly paid to send local high school students to attend this week-long camp held at the U of M Crookston Campus. Dates for the camp are July 10 - 16. Saturday, February 5th is the One Rotary Summit. We encourage members at all levels of experience with Rotary to participate. This is not designed just for Club leaders. This will be a free District wide virtual meeting discussing Membership, Public Image, and Rotary Foundation. There will be breakout sessions with Rotarians from around the District to discuss how their clubs are progressing. Take a chance to learn and join us on a Saturday morning. Lisa Neitzel and her company are working on the design for the roll up sign (like our 4-Way-Test) to post in front of our meetings.
Mark is looking into co-sponsoring a blood drive with the Y given how low the blood supply is currently.
February is Rotary Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution month.
