By now everyone has heard that District 5580 was awarded a Refugee Relief Grant for $25,000 based on the application submitted by Bob Sherman to help support a school in Warsaw. Thank you to Bob, DG Keith, and Foundation Chair Herb Schmidt for their work to make this a reality. The District has the funds, and they are waiting to be used to purchase and ship school supplies to Warsaw. We should all be proud of our Rotary.
Last Friday Our guests were: from #25 Dan Dock, David Lewis' kids Nidel, Tracey, Ambrose, Macer, and Emmerlee, and Deputy Chief Mike Ceynowa (our speaker).
Duluth Police Department Deputy Chief Mike Ceynowa is a 24 year veteran of the Department. He was promoted again just two months ago. He caught our attention right away with his story of his work in CSI and discovering $100,000 in unclaimed evidence. He spoke of the challenge in hiring new officers when only 500 trainees took the test last year versus the usual 1000. He noted that in the Twin Cities alone there are 500 openings. He talked about how technology is impacting policing with the use of body cameras, drones, and data analytics. Community policing is a priority for the Department where they attend 168 neighborhood events on Neighborhood Night Out. They work with kids on fishing and Cops and Cars at Bayfront.
After the meeting we talked about a program called, Citizen Police Academy, which is held once per year for 25 participants to learn what policing in our community is really all about. Thank you to Deputy Chief Mike and the DPD for keeping our community safe.
