A huge thank you to Skyline Club members for supporting the UMD sponsored TEDxDuluth Conference. It was a tremendous success with nearly 200 in attendance and especially for a first time event. Star Gump and Kadie Knudson deserve most of the credit for the success. Our early contribution allowed for locking in the use of the DECC. Our volunteers and attendees all chipped in (as usual) to help as needed. The 16 speakers were inspiring. Many told stories of overcoming very difficult challenges in their lives only to recover and find success and joy in their lives. Their stories will continue to inspire and enlighten as they are available online. It will take about a month for the sessions to be ready to post on the TED website. I will let you know when they are available and suggest some to watch. Thank you again.
Our Board met today. We focused on the upcoming Rock the Skyline, the potential Guatemala project, recruiting Corporate and Young professional members, and youth scholarships and RYLA recruiting. The Board supported funding to buy tools for Tom and Susan's mission trip.
An update on the potential Guatemala project from Kevin. There is a Rotary Club in Antigua that appears to be looking to help Santa Maria de Jesus which is just 6 miles away through the mountains. Kevin was able to arrange a trip to the city. Having a Rotary Club nearby would be a big help in pursuing a Rotary Grant. Kevin will have an interesting story to tell us.
Students from Proctor and Hermantown will be joining us this week. Mark and Tom visited Proctor and Hermantown schools last week to drop off and discuss RYLA flyers and student scholarships. Please make our students feel welcome.
Rock the Skyline on February 28th at the Shriner's Event Center 5-10:00. Tickets online $35. Lots of great food, cider and beer for "tasting". A silent auction and great music including Big Wave Dave and the Ripples. So warm up your dancing shoes.
Our March 20th meeting will be a Bring a Guest Day. We are also considering supporting a cause on that day.
March 27th is our next opening for a speaker if you have someone that you would like to invite to speak.
Febuary is Rotary International Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month.
Thought for the Week
"Remember that life is a journey that can be full of joy if you look for it. Find it in Service, in giving, in kindness, in sacrifice, in laughter, in understanding, in love, and in friendship. Find it in Rotary and share that joy with others. When you give joy to others, that joy comes back to you."
PDG Roberta Pickett from Rotary Leadership Module 5 Meaning and Motivation. Members of our District were asked to evaluate this RI developed Leadership Training which will then be turned back to Districts to use as they see fit. It was very well done and will serve developing Rotary leaders well.
