This Thursday the 7th is the Lion's Club Pancake Breakfast starting at 7:00 AM at the DECC Pioneer Hall. Over the last few years there has been a special table for their Rotary friends. If you go look for the Rotary table. 

 

Despite the snow today it is time to get the Kids Garden ready for the cute cute kiddos to plant their vegies. There is some work to be done on the fence, gate, and grounds. Emily says that Esko school kids are coming to work on the grounds on the 13th, so lets meet at 10:00 on Monday the 11th to get things ready for them. Mark will bring tools and materials. Shouldn't take more than an hour.   

 

Jason and crew met after last week's meeting to look at the Rocky Run Trail by the Hermantown City Center. We will look for a report this week on what they found. 

 

Tom and Mark had the privilege of delivering scholarships to deserving Proctor High School students at their awards ceremony on Monday. Jim Vos was the MC. Scholarships were awarded to Sophie Kolkestad, Logan Scanlon, and Isabella McPhee. Thank you to Skyliners who help to raise the funds to make this happen for youth in our community. 

 

Tom received materials for 6 YMCA benches on Monday. 

 

May Board Meeting will be next week Tuesday the 12th at 11:30 at the Depot.

We remembered our long time friend Todd E Johnson who passed away last week. He was a 49 year Skyliner. He was married to Jan for 66 years. Greg talked to Jan who told him that there will be a memorial at the AAD Shriners Center on Thursday, June 11th. Todd was the Club historian so it was appropriate to review the 1983-84 Skyline Club Roster and the documents we recently received on the Chartering of the Club in 1973. Todd was a great friend.

Deb gave a report on our Guatemala project. The funds provided by Skyline were used to purchase 9 laptops for student use and to provide clean water for 800 youths. Next step is to determine the scope and building cost for a Community Center and the write a grant application.

Tom introduced Jim Philbin from One Roof Community Housing. Jim is the Senior Director for the Community Land Trust Program. Jim has worked for One Roof for over 25 years. He has helped to develop over 400 affordable single-family Community Land Trust homes. Jim explained how a community land trust can help to provide affordable housing to lower income people who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a home. There are 500 applications per year to become part of the program. The land under the home stays in trust eliminating a down payment and making the houses more affordable. There is an income limit for qualification, but not after the home is owned so that the owner can gain equity. At a time when home ownership has become so difficult One Roof is doing a great service for our community.
