This Friday we will meet in person at the YMCA and by Zoom.
We have an update on the current YMCA mask policy. "For any adults, if you are vaccinated you do not need to wear a mask in our building. If you are not vaccinated, we recommend that you wear a mask." They still ask that we maintain distances between attendees as much as possible. We are grateful for the use of the facility so please follow the spirit of their rules.
May is Rotary Youth Service Month.
Our presentation will be from the District Conference with a video update of the Youth Programs; Ryla, Rotaract, Interact, and Student Exchange. Duties this week are: Invocation - Matt Wicklund and Fellowship - Brian Tasky.
Next week we will meet at the Bent Paddle Tap Room. Lunch will be catered. Craft District business owners will be invited, and we will talk about Rotary and have some good fellowship time. More meetings in the Craft District are being planned.
We received a nice thank you letter from the Boys & Girls Club for our Disc Golf project.
Did you see that our recent presenter, Dan Hartman from Glensheen, was selected as the new Executive Director of the DECC. He did a great job at Glensheen and will be great for Duluth tourism in his new position at the DECC.
North Shore Rotary Club will be holding their Lyle Northey - Forekids Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 26th at Lakeview Golf Course starting with breakfast and 8:00 AM tee times. Proceeds will go to students for RYLA, Scholarships, and Interact. This year's event is particularly special as Lyle passed away in this last year. At a District Governor's meeting this week I was pleased to learn that the District is sending two respirators to India where DG Elect Keith Brokke knows Rotarians who will put the equipment to use helping with the pandemic.
Last week's meeting was very special. We inducted Jodi May and Stacey Johnson into the Club, and the night before we learned that our Grant Application for the Nigeria Health Center project was approved. Fantastic!
Guests last week were: Kay Biga (our speaker), Pat Spott (Kay's husband and a Rotarian), Mark Zack (President of Equal As One and our partner on the Grant), Karl Everett (a Harbortown Rotarian and mentor on our Grant), and Lyssa Goranson (Mark's past coworker and potential member).
Last week's presenter was District Governor Nominee Kay Biga. Kay is a member of the Eco Rotary Club, she works in the Spott Law Office, was a professor at UWS, a graduate of Hamline Law School and has a Masters in Management from St. Scholastica. Kay spoke about her initiative to increase membership in Rotary and especially, "Women in Rotary".
She reviewed RI statistics saying that there are 34% women in District 5580. She made suggestions about where to find potential women members, and how meeting times can impact women's decision to join or stay in Rotary. Kay asked that we "like" their Facebook page, and put three meeting dates annually on our Club calendar designated to invite perspective member meetings. Thank you to Kay. She will be an outstanding DG in 2022-2023.
