This Friday, June 30th we will meet at the YMCA. Our presenter will be Don Monaco owner of Monaco Air Duluth. Duties are: Invocation - Jodi May, Greeter - Suzanne Anderson, and Fellowship - Trish Crego.
This Saturday, July 1st at noon at the Grand Portage Casino will be a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the building of the Outlaw Bridge by the Duluth and Port Arthur Rotary Clubs.
Our guests last week were Gina Blair guest of Kevin Kalligher and our presenter Interim UMD Chancellor David McMillan. David was a 1983 graduate of UMD where he met his wife. He went on to law school in Minneapolis before returning to Duluth in 1989 to join the legal team at Minnesota Power. He retired as a Senior Vice President of Allete. During his tenure he was on the boards of St. Luke's, the DECC, APEX, UMD's NRRI, Goodwill, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, the Great Lakes Seaway Advisory Board, and the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. David was also a Downtown Rotarian. He talked about the upcoming challenges and opportunities for UMD. The campus was sized for 10,000 undergraduate students and there are currently 7,800. So recruiting students and fiscal stability are current challenges. The demographics that has fewer undergraduate age student available means that recruiting is difficult. UMD has strong programs in the Swenson School of engineering and at LSBE. Future opportunities are for an expanded medical school located in the hospital district although the design funding was not included in the current bonding bill, and for locating a new Large Lakes Observatory on the lakefront with a dock for the Blue Heron research vessel. Chancellor McMillan's Interim tenure contract is for until 2024. Thank you Suzanne for inviting the Chancellor to speak with us.

Changing of the Guard will be Thursday evening July 13th.
Russ sent out the invitation to play in or sponsor the Valley Youth Center Gopher Golph Classic on Friday, August 4th with 9:30 shotgun start at Nemadji Golf Course.
June is Rotary Fellowship Month.
