Welcome to Skyline Rotary

Duluth Skyline Rotary is a member of Rotary District 5580
Skyline Rotary Meets weekly on Fridays at 12:00 PM.
We will be meeting both virtually using Zoom and/or in person at the Duluth YMCA:
Duluth YMCA: 4289 Ugstad Rd. Hermantown, MN 55811 - Driving Directions

We will meet at the YMCA this Friday the 18th, and it will be a hybrid meeting. The program this week is brought to us by Bob Sherman. Bob will tell us about the Sunrise Linguistics School built in Kambarka, Russia funded by Duluth Rotary Clubs including Skyline. We will be joined by Anna, Polina, and Felix from Russia via Zoom.
Duties this week are: Invocation -  Greg Kaake and Fellowship - Suzanne Anderson.

This is the second of two notices for David Lewis to become our newest Club member.

There will be a District 5580 Virtual Conference held on April 21 and 22. Sessions will be from 11:30-1:30 and 4:00-5:30 both days.

Kris Lee has made arrangements for our Friday meeting on March 18th to be a visit to the Duluth Curling Club at the DECC. This is your chance to try curling if you have never done it before. Think about bringing family and friends who might want to try curling. We will have lunch and those of us with bad knees will watch and perhaps have a beverage from the restaurant. Who knows, you could be the next Olympic curler. Thank you Kris.

Guests at last week's meeting were: From Proctor High School Trevor Lanthier and Grant Walker, Guest and son of Todd E. Johnson, Elliot, our junior most Rotarian and daughter of Trish, Lyla Crego, and Club 25 visiting Rotarian Dan Dock.
Mark read from the thank you letter sent to our Club by  Duluth Fire Department Chief Shawn Krizaj. Please see the letter on our website. Mark then introduced Chief Krizaj.
Chief Krizaj spoke about his 28-year career in firefighting including his early years in forest fire fighting and his 25 years with the Duluth Fire Department. He said that he enjoys his work in firefighting because, “You come to work and you never know what will happen”.   That is a good description for the array of work that his Department does from putting out fires, to water rescue, to kid car seats, to Hazmat team, to car crash extractions, to medical calls, and even relocating a confused beaver from the middle of Woodland Avenue. The Department is kept very busy with almost 15,000 calls for service in 2021.
Thank you to Chief Krizaj and to our Duluth Fire Department for the work that they do to keep us safe.

We just learned that Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is planned for this summer. This is a life changing experience for youth from our District. Skyline has regularly paid to send local high school students to attend this week-long camp held at the U of M Crookston Campus. Dates for the camp are July 10 - 16. You can learn more at: www.district5580ryla.org Russ will keep the Club informed about the process including the student selection.

Final Jeopardy Question this week - What city of approximately 90,000 population is located on the largest of the Great Lakes? All three contestants got it wrong. Two answered Green Bay and one answered Minneapolis. I don't get final Jeopardy questions right very often.

Notes from the virtual One Rotary Summit held last Saturday will be sent out following this email.

Next week's program will be by Michele Keil from the Memorial Blood Center speaking about how we can organize blood donations. Duties will be: Invocation - Jim Curtis and Fellowship - Chris Sward.
