This Friday 3/25 we will meet at the YMCA, and it will be a hybrid meeting. Our presenter will be Matt Baumgartner, Executive Director of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce. Duties are: Invocation - Mark Leutgeb and Fellowship - Tim Leutgeb.
We are all aware of the humanitarian crisis that the war in Ukraine has caused. Rotary International is responding.
Skyliner Bob Sherman will leave for Warsaw, Poland next week to work with two Clubs. They will evaluate projects to help refugees. Our donations will help to fund these projects. Bob will give further updates on our progress this Friday. Our website now has current information and a donation site to our fundraising account thanks to Lisa, Kris, and Chris. If you wish to contribute this Friday please bring a check for Bob who will be transferring funds to the Warsaw Club.
Next week's Friday meeting 4/1 will be at the YMCA. Our presenter will be Scott Soderberg, Harbortown Rotarian and District 5580 Communications Committee Chair. Scott will talk about the Kraus-Anderson Bike Duluth Festival. Duties will be: Invocation -Russ Salgy and Fellowship - Rob Shamblott.
Last Friday we met at the Duluth Curling Club. Our guests were: Sarah Boynton, Tony Rogers, Anita Curtis, and Chris Plys (our speaker). Thank you to Kris Lee for arranging the meeting, our speaker, and for teaching us to curl. Kris had a happy buck for all of her family and extended family who call the Club their home. Todd Johnson had great news about $281M of funding for Boys and Girls Clubs of America from MacKenzie Scott (Bezos). Kris introduced Chris Plys who was a member of the US Olympic Curling team. Chris told us his personal story of growing up in the west end and spending time at the Boys and Girls Club. His father had brain cancer and passed in 2012. Chris took over the family business and they began to carry out his father's wish through Project Joy to Feed Hungry Kids.
Chris was the first one off of the plane in Beijing, and he saw 30 people in biohazard suits. Chris spoke of being in the village with people from around the world who all had the same thing in common, "We all have people we love back home". Chris was part of the Shuster team, but also competed with a women partner from Alaska in mixed doubles. He tells us that the team has one more Olympic competition in them. Thank you Kris and Chris. Curling isn't easy.
March is Rotary Water and Sanitation Month.
Our Club's District grant Nigeria project is a WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) project. Our funding is providing the water well system and the mound sanitation system for the Health Care clinic.
