“Good morning, Splash Pad Committee!
“I just received the long-awaited call from Lisa Luokkala from Duluth Parks and Rec. She did express her appreciation for Rotary and for past partnerships on Park and Rec projects.
“After that, the conversation wasn't quite what I'd expected. She was the first person I've spoken to who was... less than excited by the concept.
“In short, she said that the City of Duluth has no interest in a splash pad. It's been brought up in the past but rejected due to the short summer season and that they have to factor in not just the initial investment but the entire life of the park - including future replacement before even beginning. If we were to really push for it, she said it would be an extensive, public process within the department to evaluate current community interest. It would then have to be in the long-term planning process/plan. At the moment it's "not a priority and not in any plans".
“My friend, Amanda, on the parks board still plans to bring it up on Thursday, but I don't see high hopes.
“In the meantime, I will be following up with other rotary clubs who have been though this process on the next steps and to get more documentation from them - as we discussed in our last meeting.
Thanks everyone!”
