The two Rotary clubs of Detroit Lakes presented Dictionaries to over four hundred 3rd Grade Students in DL, Audubon-Lake Park, Waubun-Ogema-White Earth, & Frazee-Vergas in early November. This program has been one of the local Rotary service projects for the past 8 years. Here we are end of September, already completed three months of our new Rotary year. I am proud to serve as your President for the 19-20 Rotary Year. We have a great club and I look forward to working with our great Board and members in making this the best year yet of “Service Above Self.” Highway cleanup, chaired by Adrienne Buboltz and Bill Henke, was a huge success once again. A big THANK YOU to the many Rotarians that stepped up to make our section of Highway 10 shine. It was then on to the Bloodscreening, chaired by Adrienne Buboltz. Although our numbers were down some, we need to remember the great community service this project provides. We continue to hear stories of individuals that as a result of this service found health issues sooner rather than later. Thank you to the many members and spouses who helped during the week of the screening. Welcome to new members, Skye Fingalson, Natalie Bly and Crystal Piekarski. We look forward to their contribution to our club. Our membership is currently at 98 members, meeting our goal for the year, but we need to continue to invite potential new members to our club. The next few months will be full of many more projects, Wine Pairing, Halloween Safety Tape for the kids, Literacy Project Dictionaries, 4 Way Essay Contest, World Polio Day, Foundation Month and Salvation Army Bell Ringing to name a few. Thank you to those members who have stepped up to chair these events. The Board has been busy making plans on new fundraising ideas as well as some new social events. Stay tuned to learn more! If you have some ideas, please share them with me or with any board member. Again, I am honored to serve as President of this great club, but it is the board and membership that make it a great club. The Rotary Board passed a program for our club called the Rising Star Program. This is a program that many Rotary Clubs are using to attract younger members. As many of us remember from our younger days, it is not always easy to afford a membership in Rotary. With the Rising Star program we offer a reduced dues structure for new members 40 years of age or younger. We reduce their annual dues from $225 a year to $100 a year for those younger members whose dues are not paid by their employer. Now....it's up to us to get out and recruit younger members. The success of our club depends on getting younger members with new ideas and fresh energy. So, if you know someone who will make a good Rotarian, invite them to a meeting. But, that's not the only new membership opportunity. We have also passed the Corporate Membership Program. This gives employers with 50 or more employees a chance to get more involved in Rotary. These employers have trouble finding people who can meet Rotary's attendance requirements. With a corporate membership, the corporation can have 2 to 4 employees join under one membership. Each week a different one of the employees can attend. They are charged the dues for one membership and one meal charge each week. This is a great way to get more people involved. If you know any of these employers where this would be a good option, let them know about the opportunity. These new memberships are only effective if we as a club promote them!

By: Annmarie Lacher Thank you to the Noon Rotarians who volunteered to help at the United Way Community Celebration on September 19 at the Pavilion. The success of the Community Celebration relies upon youth and adult volunteers from several area services organizations including both Rotary Clubs and Interact. The Community Celebration is, as the name suggests, open to everyone in our community and a great way to see what the United Way, and all of its partner programs, provide to the citizens of Becker County. It’s also a way to celebrate who we are as a community! The annual free event includes information booths from United Way partner programs, live music, a picnic supper, inflatable and several other games for children, and lots of prize giveaways.

Back on July 5th, we had a program with Erik Elsea & Holly Anderson talking about Erik's Mississippi trip to raise money for Shelter Box. So where is he? Well, he made it to the Gulf of Mexico on October 6th and raised over $57,000 for ShelterBox. It was fun to trace his daily travels via Facebook and GPS. What an incredible journey for a great cause.

On August 1st & 2nd, District Governor Blaine Johnson visited our club. He met with the board of directors on August 1st and we exchanged ideas as well as letting him know what our club is up to. You can view the visit as a way to showcase your club or you worry about how the District Governor is going to critique you. I've been in on about 17 District Governor visits and I'm happy to say that with all of those meetings, we've had a chance to showcase our club and be proud of the many things that we're doing. One of his goals this year is to make Rotary more family friendly and to do more family type activities. He is working on making the district conference a place where families can come together and there's something for everyone. If you heard him speak at our meeting, you know that he thinks outside of the box and is looking towards the future of Rotary.

We had a great turnout with 140 people at the fundraiser for the Puerto Rico Energy Project. We had great Caribbean food and of course a full section of rum drinks. There was a silent auction, salsa dancing lessons and or course, plenty of Rotary fellowship. The event raised over $5000 with a matching $5000 dollar grant from District 5580. Thank you to Brad Green and his committee for doing a fantastic job on this project.

At our July 5th meeting Erik Elsea and Holly Anderson presented on the ShelterBox project. Shelter Box provides tent type shelters to help those who have been struck by disasters. Erik is working his way by canoe down the Mississippi River to raise funds for ShelterBox. Follow his travels on Facebook, #mississippiexpedition. His plan is to leave on July 7th and it's going to take him 90 days to get down to the Gulf of Mexico. You can also donate to his fundraising goal to help out the ShelterBox project.

Our Club's visit from the District Governor will be on August 2nd. This is early in the year for us and a chance for us to show the District Governor what a great club that we have. This year's District Governor is Blaine Johnson from Bismarck. Blaine is one of the younger District Governors that we've had. He is putting an emphasis on having whole families participate in Rotary activities. He is anxious to make some positive changes in order to attract new Rotarians. Here are some numbers for this year's blood screening which we completed on September 15th. Thank you again to Adrienne Buboltz who once again chaired our largest fundraiser. Organizational meetings began in July with Essentia staff. 25 churches in the area were contacted about promoting the blood screening in their bulletins. Bundles of brochures were handed out to area businesses, TV3 interviews were done along with radio interviews to promote the event. Articles were also published in the newspaper. We used 13 volunteers per the 7 days of the event, including Rotarians, spouses and friends. We had a total of 1892 people go through the blood screening event. The highest day was Wednesday the 13th with 374 people going through. Thanks to all of our volunteers

Winter has arrived, and we are thankful? As we await the impending bitter cold bite of winter up here in the northland, we have to remind ourselves how fortunate we are, to not have the type of weather and wildfire problems that have devastated many parts of the US, and numerous countries around us, in the past months. November is a time to slowly acclimate to the drop in the thermometer and is typically a month to reflect and give thanks. Thanks for all the good things that have transpired throughout the year and thanks to all the people who have made efforts to make our lives, our community, and our world a little bit better … But, where to start? Friends, family, co-workers, veterans, club members? The list is seemingly endless and the story might be a little bit different for each of us, but we probably ALL have someone or something that we could or should recognize for making a difference in our lives. And, although we shouldn’t wait for a Holiday to thank those around us… it is an opportunity to make up for any appreciation that may have been overlooked or under-emphasized in the past. So, take a moment and reflect, and then more importantly, seize the opportunity to act on it. And… yes, my personal thank you to all the members, directors, officers, and committee chairs who have shared their time and many talents to help serve our club and our community. Thank You! Foundation Month November is also Foundation month for Rotary. So from maybe a different perspective, it is a month to understand that there are many people in our community and throughout the world that count on and are thankful to Rotary and to Rotarians, and thankful to our club, for all the times we provide “service above self”, and for all the ways we are able to follow in the foundation motto of: “doing good in the world”. As individuals, we don’t always get to hear those thanks, but we need to understand that the projects we support and donations we make provide significant differences in the lives of others, many of which are “life-changing” and sometimes even “life-enabling”. So, Thank You to all have supported the foundation in the past, and Thank You to all who will choose to support it in the future.

Once again this month I was reminded of why Rotary is such a great organization. As big as Rotary as a whole is, the true spirit of Rotary comes down to each individual club and each individual member of that club. It was once again meaningful this past month when my mother-in-law passed away. There were so many kind words and deeds expressed to myself and my family, that it reinforced the reasons that I'm proud to be part of the Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary. It also reminded me of the spring of 2007 as our family prepared for my daughters high school graduation party. To make a long story short, my wife Lisa had been down with chronic migraines for some time and we were having a hard time preparing for the party. One night, a group of Rotarians showed up at our house with food and started helping out with yard projects and other household chores. What a welcome surprise and a tribute to the meaning of the 4 Way Test. I know that we will never forget that time and what it meant to our family. There are many ways that Rotary helps out. Whether it's putting in drinking wells in a far away country or just helping out a fellow member in need, it all makes a difference. Many of you have probably heard the story of the two men walking along an ocean beach where thousands of starfish had washed ashore. One of the men reached down and tossed one of the starfish back into the ocean. The other man asked what difference that made with the thousands of other starfish still washed up on the beach. The first man replied, "It made a difference to that one". Every good deed that we do makes a difference to someone.

Secretary Dawn recently shared with me some of the membership ideas from our District and I think it's important that we all look take a good look at it. Why “Getting New Members” needs to be the No. 1 Goal of all Rotary Clubs in our District! Members frequently ask: “Why is it necessary to place so much emphasis on recruitment of new members? We have a good club, and provide services to our community, surrounding area, our country and international causes. Why can’t we just be happy and satisfied with our present membership?” Unfortunately, these are comments from members of a club destined to die due to aging of members, members leaving (Attrition), lack of enthusiasm, too much contentment, purpose, and a real desire and objective to share and help others experience the power of Rotary. Recruiting new members brings the following benefits to the Club! Increased capacity to serve our community. With 10 members, a club can do “X” number of projects. With 50 members, a club can mathematically do “Y” (more) number of projects. In reality, studies show that the greater the mass (members), the effectiveness is greater. Fresh ideas, interests, and energy. New members bring new ideas, concepts, and approaches based on their experience and knowledge which broadens the total knowledge base of the club and helps it better serve the community and mankind. Diversity. Diversity of ideas and experience broadens a Club’s ability to perform existing ideas better, as well as developing new ideas for service. Future Leaders. An ongoing recruitment program helps develop new leaders within the Club for future leadership roles—both within the Club and in their professions, community, and society. Long term continuity of the club and the organization. Perhaps the military is the best example of the need to constantly bring in new members. Everyone ages each year, and it is critical that new members are added each year to have a constant-ongoing inflow of new talent and younger people to provide the initiative and youth (supported by the trained middle aged and experienced military) to maintain a thriving and growing organization.

Many of you who have been members of our club for awhile will remember PDG Hanspeter Borgwarth and his wife Giesela. They visited our club often and were very active in District events. As a member of the District 5580 Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) Committee, I have been working with Joseph Hildego and Darrin Guidry. Joe and Darrin are Rotarians from Rotary District 6200 in Louisiana, who will be hosting a RFE with District 5580 in spring 2017. At one of our early August 5580 RFE committee meetings during the time of the terrible flooding in southern Louisiana, Tom Riley, suggested the question of “how can we help” be asked of our Louisiana contacts.
Joe promptly responded that the local Opelousas Food Panty had flooded and a majority of their food had perished. Their local Rotary club had just that spring raised enough money to help the food panty purchase enough food to last through the summer into the fall. As so often is the case, those of meager funds were the ones most affected by this flood. Joe stated they would be very grateful for anything we could do to help restock the food pantry shelves.
This information was shared with the Detroit Lakes Breakfast and Detroit Lakes Noon clubs. Following approval from both boards, a fund drive was started through the community Rotary foundation called “Service Above Self”. The Service Above Self foundation kicked off the fund raising with a $1000 donation. Knowing the funds were going directly to those in need, and not through an established national charity, helped the foundation board decide to contribute. Within a few days, a total of $3110 had been collected to help fund the need of the Opelousas Food Bank.
The opportunity to directly serve those in need was made possible through the connections established via the Rotary Friendship Exchange. The District Governor of District 5580, Herb Schmidt, made a visit to our club at our September 22nd meeting. District Governor Herb praised our club for many projects and good works that we have done. Our club has always been a good contributor to the Rotary Foundation and District Governor Herb encouraged us to keep it up and went on to tell us about the many worthwhile projects that our district is doing with Foundation dollars.

Legendary singer and polio survivor Donovan Leitch, better known simply as Donovan, has joined Rotary in its fight to eradicate the paralyzing disease that afflicted him during much of his childhood.
Donovan contracted polio at age three in Glasgow, Scotland. The disease weakened his right leg and left it thinner and shorter than the other. Confined to his bed for much of his childhood, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer said his father would read him poetry.
In a recent interview with the Daily Express, Donovan said that listening to poetry piqued his interest in creative writing. “If I hadn’t had that experience maybe I wouldn’t have gone on to write and sing my own songs for the past half a century.
“I feel strongly that having a disability in one area makes you explore others instead. That was the case for me after having polio,” says Donovan, who recently became a Rotary polio ambassador.
Donovan went on to record several hit albums and singles in the UK, United States, and other countries. His top singles include “Mellow Yellow” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Donovan collaborated with The Beatles on songs including “Yellow Submarine” and has shared the stage with musical icons Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.
“Having had polio never held me back as I got older. Although having one leg smaller than the other isn’t much fun I could always get about without any trouble,” Donovan says. “Luckily in the music industry everyone was only interested in my singing and playing and not the size of my legs.”
As a Rotary polio ambassador, Donovan will support the Purple4Polio campaign, a collaboration between Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal Horticultural Society. The purple represents the colored dye that health workers use during immunization campaigns to mark the fingers of children who have received the polio vaccine.
“It was very easy to join this campaign because I had polio, and I wanted to tell everybody that it’s almost eradicated around the world,” Donovan says. “This is very important. I want to help with that last push, which is always the hardest. ”

Dr. Larry Morrison once again led a group of Rotarians and other eye professionals through VOSS on a trip to Jamaica to conduct an eye clinic. They distributed thousands of pairs of glasses and saw about 900 patients during the week the eye clinic was open. The following week they were able to enjoy some R&R and four of the Rotarians in the group did a make up meeting in Jamaica. Here is an update of our Feb. 27 program that was written by Dick Hecock of the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club.
Catherine Kigwana Strum was the featured speaker at the DL Noon Rotary meeting this afternoon. The program chair was the club’s Ed Gehrke who has maintained with Ms. Strum a twenty-five year friendship which began in the Jinja area, near the headwaters of the Nile River in Uganda. Ed set the stage with a series of pictures of the village of Kimanto, its resources and people. He described the problems facing the community, with a special focus on the lack of adequate health care facilities. Mortality rates are high, life expectancies low, disabling diseases are commonplace. Health care costs, particularly the economic and social costs associated with transport to clinics and hospitals in nearby cities, are prohibitive for most of Kimanto’s approximately 10,000 residents.
Kimanto native Catherine Kigwana Strum picked up the story from there, describing an opportunity to establish a local clinic which could overcome many of the shortcomings of the current health care delivery system. A clinic building has been constructed, and additional funds and other resources for equipping and supplying the facility are being sought.
Catherine and Ed have been in contact with a local Rotary Club in Jinja city which is interested in partnering with other Rotarians in seeking Rotary International Funds for establishing a Kimanto medical clinic. To help facilitate the project, the Jinja club includes members with medical, engineering, and other skills that would be directly applicable to the effort. Also, Katherine has a close relationship with a member of the Ugandan government who is expected to ensure that government barriers to such a project would be minimized.
Working with Catherine, Jinja Rotarians, District 5580 personnel, and in consultation with Rotary Foundation staff, Ed is trying to put together a proposal which would lead to raising about $35,000 towards the project.

Several Rotarians, led by Dr. Larry Morrison, are in Jamaica this week for an eye clinic. Dr. Morrison has been going there for several years through an organization called VOSH. Rotarians Brad and Janet Green and Bob Louiseau from our club as well as Dr. Don Fletcher from the Ft. Garry Club in Winnipeg are part of the team assisting Dr. Morrison. They brought 5,000 pairs of eyeglasses along that will be distributed. They will have a busy week!

TONYA STOLL of the Freedom Resource Center was the speaker at our Feb. 12 meeting. For more than 25 years, the Freedom Resource Center has been helping people with disabilities live independently. They serve anyone of any age that has any type of disability. there are no income or medical qualifications. They help with a variety of independent living tasks such as learning how to manage money, finding a place to live, job and educational possibilities, and dealing with discrimination and bureaucracy. They are headquartered in Fargo, but now have six locations, including Detroit Lakes which is staffed by Tonya. Dr. Ananya Chatterjea, an associate professor of dance at the University of Minnesota, brought three members of the Ananya Dance Group to Rotary. They will be performing at the Holmes Theatre on Sat., Nov. 8 and are also doing several outreach activities at schools and dance studios in the community this week. One of the dancers is Detroit Lakes native Brittany Radke who owns a dance studio in the Twin Cities. A native of Calcutta, India, Dr. Chatterjea moved to Minnesota in 1998. Ananya uses dance to demonstrate social injustice, to unleash latent energy and to provoke hope and help us surpass our potential. Other members that were at Rotary included Renee Copeland and Katie Haines. Together they ended the Rotary program with an interactive dance. Many of the Rotarians have a trait of being reticent Midwesterners so participation was limited.

The 25th Annual Rotary Blood Screening event is now in the books. It was another successful event, thanks to Adrienne Buboltz, Julie Poore, Scott Schermerhorn, the data entry staff from Essentia St. Mary's and the lab technicians from Sanford Clinic and Essentia St. Mary's, not to mention all the Rotarians who showed up early (only a few needed a phone call to get out of bed) to work each day.
Here is a breakdown of the numbers served each day:
Thurs., Sept. 11 -- 194 (Essentia Health St. Mary's)
Fri., Sept. 12 -- 230 (business day)
Mon., Sept. 15 -- 276
Tues., Sept. 16 -- 366
Wed., Sept. 17 -- 414
Thurs., Sept. 18 -- 408
Fri., Sept. 19 -- 376
TOTAL -- 2,264 -- that's more than 2013 (2,111), 2012 (2,149), 2011 (2,214) and very close to 2010 (2,301). Way to go! Thank you all for your efforts. There will be an updated with net revenue in the upcoming weeks.

The annual Rotary Spaghetti Dinner is coming up on February 11th. Everyone is expected to help out with this event. It takes many hands to make this a success. Sign up sheets are going around at Rotary or you can contact Ashley Drewes or Kristi Fritz to sign up.

The nominating committee is currently recruiting mmembers for Board positions for next year. If you're asked to serve, please step up and help out.
We received news from District Secretary Diane Collins that Dennis Borgwarth, the youngest son of Past District Governor Hanspeter Borgwarth has passed away. Hans Peter has been very active in Rotary and has visitied our club on numerous occasions. Sympathies go out to Hans Peter and his wife Gisela.
As I scramble to get the newsletter out, I'm thinking to myself, "Yes, it's finally my turn". Lisa and I and several other Rotary couples will be leaving for Cabo San Lucas on Saturday. I can't wait to just sit in the sun.
Finally...sell, sell, sell those spaghetti tickets. Last year Dick Carr sold over $2000 worth of tickets. That's a lot of slack to pick up.

I've been getting quite a few questions regarding the on-line make-ups. Here's a step by step to get you going on electronic make-ups:
- From our club's website homepage (www.clubrunner.ca/detroitlakesnoon) go to Rotary Links on the left hand side of the page
- Click "Cyber Make-up"
- Go to the top of the page and click "Make Up Program"
- Go to two or three different stories. As you read, keep in mind they are going to ask you these questions:
1. Are there any ideas about this story that you could share?
2. What changes on the site do you recommend?
3. What did you like most about your visit to this site?
4. What topics would you like to see in the future?
- After you have read your articles, click on "Request Make-up Form"
- Click on either "Don't Want to Contribute" or "Contribute"
- Click on "Request Make-up Form"
- Bring your make-up form to Secretary Dawn for credit

Over the years it's gotten easier to make up a missed Rotary meeting. You have 14 days before or after a missed meeting to do a make-up. Here are some easy ways to make-up.
- Tuesday morning Breakfast Rotary
- On-line make-up (click on the cyber make-up link on our homepage)
- Attend a Board meeting (2nd & 4th Tuesdays at the Holiday Inn)
- Attend a committee meeting
- Work at a Rotary function
- Make-up at a nearby club (Perham, Park Rapids, or Pelican Rapids)
Just let me know that you've done a make-up and I'll make sure you get credit.

Peter Jacobson presented Club President Wayne Pudwill with a check for $20,051 for the proceeds from the 2013 Blood Screening project. This is by far our largest fundraiser. Peter emphasized what a good partnership we have and how the project benefits the community.
Thanks to Adrienne Buboltz for organizing the many volunteer hours that are needed to make the Blood Screening a success.

The District Governor of Rotary District 5580, Dave Smette, visited our club on October 10th. He had an inspiring message for us about all the things that our contributions do around the world. He emphasized that even if we cannot personally go on Rotary missions, we are still a part of the projects with our donations. He also talked about all the good that Rotary does in the world and that Rotarians can get into countries that need help when other governments cannot.

The Rotary International Goodwill Weekend was held in Detroit Lakes September 13 & 14th. The weekend was a great success and a big "Thank You" goes out to Brad Green and the Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary members who helped out to plan the event. Everyone had a great time and along with plenty of Rotary fellowship, we learned a great deal about how to acheive peace throughout the world.

The Detroit Lakes Rotary Club was chartered on September 28, 1922. There were 18 charter members and 7 new members were added that first year.
We have had two members who have served as District Governor. They were Fred Kegel, 1975-76, and David Fihn, 1985-86.
Some of our projects include: Dollars for Scholars, MUNA/RYLA, Interact Club, Boy Scouts, Rotary Soccer Fields, TeacHaiti, Eyes on Jamaica, Boys & Girls Club, Student Exchange Program, Polio Plus.
