June 6th Meeting

Hi Everyone,

Our next Rotaract meeting is this Wednesday and Anita Gaffney from the Stratford Festival will be our guest speaker. It's been an action packed week at the Festival and I'm sure she will have lots of stories to share!

Our meeting will once again be at Libro. The address is 391 Huron St and please remember to use the back door. The backdoor is typically locked, but there is a black buzzer to the right of the door that you can ring.

With the heat wave we had last week, our friends at Shelterlink are looking for some fans to help keep them and those who use their services cool. If you have a fan you could donate, please bring it to the meeting. Kelly has graciously volunteered to drop off any fans we collect. Thanks Kelly!

As Rotaractors, we also have the opportunity to get involved with the larger Rotary family on a global level. Please see the opportunity below and consider applying. The deadline to apply is June 15th so please act quickly if you're interested.

2019 Rotary International Assembly

Rotaract leaders can apply for the opportunity to attend the 2019 Rotary International Assembly

2019-20 RI President Mark Maloney, for the first time in Rotary and Rotaract history, is inviting a select group of Rotaractors to attend the 2019 International Assembly from 16-18 January 2019 in San Diego, CA, USA.

The International Assembly, Rotary's annual training meeting, gives Rotary district governors- elect the chance to share ideas for strengthening clubs and improving communities with Rotary leaders from around the world. Keynote speakers and informative presentations will inspire and prepare governors-elect to lead their district successfully. Breakout sessions, roundtable discussions, and workshops introduce new ways of creating positive change.

District governors-elect will have a chance to hear from Rotaract leaders and incorporate new ideas and strategies into goals for 2019-20. Rotaract participants will experience the internationality of Rotary, learn from governors-elect, and develop their own new ideas and strategies to share with their clubs and districts. Both district governors-elect and Rotaractors will share an open discussion of issues important for Rotary’s continued relevance in the future.

Note: Only a limited number of Rotaract participants will have the chance to attend the 2019 International Assembly and not all applicants will be selected for this opportunity. Selected Rotaractors will be invited by 15 July 2018.

by 15 June 2018.

2. Guest Speaker Drea and Eileen from Stratford Summer Music Non-profit 6 week music Festival in various venues in Stratford. Mission is to bring world class music to Stratford and make it accessible to everybody. Some events are free or pay what you can and nothing costs more than $60. Over 100 events with 350 artists. Here are some… Play Me I’m Yours painos, the barge music, cabarets at Revival House, Musical Brunches at The Prune July 16^th is the grand illumination (amazing fireworks) –Drea recommends renting a boat and watching from the water Jeremy Dutcher—He is Wolastoqiyik indigenous and he is a classically trained singer. He had a really interesting interview on Q a few weeks ago. Look him up! Free Family event on July 22 with Orchestre de la Francophonie July 26 “Live from the Rock!” with an East Coast kitchen party afterwards Tanya Tagaq is a throat singer and she will be interpreting Nanook of the North Ron Sexsmith—singing songs inspired by his book ‘Deer Life’. VIP afterparty at Pazzo Mzansi Youth Choir from South Africa – Tribute to Nelson Mandela on Aug 22^nd. On August 24^th is a relaxed performance The Museum of the Moon has just been announced -The artist who does the play me I’m yours pianos has made a replica of the moon and it will be up above Tom Patterson island. Everything on Tom Patterson Island will be pay what you can. The barge music is a great free event and it happens every week of the festival except the first one. All sorts of different kinds of music. Thurs and Fri at noon and Sat and Sun at noon and 3pm Still looking for volunteer billeters Planning events are like painting a room. It takes more time to set up than actually doing it. There are a lot of lists and excel files and great volunteers---whose skills you utilize. Communication is also key. Artistic Director designate has been announced. The press release is on the website.

4. New Business & Idea Sharing 6.1 New Member Inductions BBQ at Cate’s house for Rotaract’s 5^th birthday. Sat June 2 at 4pm. Let us know if you need Cate’s address. Email Kelly to RSVP. BYOP. Bring a potluck item. There is a doodle signup. Bring your own lawnchairs. There will be a campfire. Bring friends/spouses, etc. -Discussion of having a Rotaract instagram page or linked in account Meeting Location – We are no longer able to meet at The Hub. If you have put up any posters with The Hub logo on it, please take them down. Rotarians have reached out with suggestions. We discussed options, how much we could spend on the space, the importance of what kind of space it is and what kind of tone it sets. Kelly discussed her vision for the upcoming year, as this might influence the type of space we are looking for. The plan is to focus more on service, integrate with other community groups and agencies, and be more hands on. Laurie mentioned that capabilities for a projector and screen would be good. We need space for about 20. Possibilities: -The Local Community Food Centre. –Charlotte will reach out to them -The YMCA (Mimi Price has offered the space. Wednesdays will work but we aren’t sure about Thursdays). –Rebecca will connect with Mimi Price -New brewery coming to town. –Laurie will reach out to them -Junction 56 – Laurie will reach out -The Boat House in the summer – Charlotte will reach out -Molly Blooms – Charlotte has been touch
5. Announcements Skate Park Request –The request has been circulated via email. They have moved on to phase 2. The goal is to make it all ages and accessible. Age 5 – 35 -We discussed providing some funds and also helping out with tree planting. Rebecca will reach out to Bruce Tree Planting – If it doesn’t work out with the skate park, Nick has some contacts at the Conservation Authority Club Kudos To Lauren for bringing pizza, and Charlotte for being really excited about it. To Shira for joining the trivia committee and volunteering last week. Kudos to Laurie for finding a meeting space for tonight.
