🏨 Hospital Merger Announcement

• Ron Gagnon, President and CEO of Grand River Hospital, announced the merger of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary's General Hospital. As of tomorrow (Apr 1), they officially became the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WREN)
• The merger is described as a historic decision that started many years ago
• Both organizations put community before individual interests

• New hospital on University of Waterloo north campus planned within the next decade

• Johnston served on Watsa's board for 17 years, with a break during his 7 years serving as Governor General
• Watsa described Johnston's background: born in Sudbury, moved to Sault Ste. Marie at age 7, academic career BA from Harvard, Cambridge and Queens for 2 Bachelor of Laws, taught at Queens, UofT, UWO and McGill, Served as Vice Chancellor of McGill, served as President of UW for 11 years before 7 years as Governor General of Canada.
• Johnston toyed with a possible NHL career at several key points in his life both at high school, where he played with future hall of famers, and also as after Harvard (where he captained the Harvard team) but chose the academic life that has served both him and Canada well
