This can be done across generations, as you’re never too old to learn, and certainly by planting the seeds early. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) offers one of those opportunities.

Check out the latest changes to Rotary! The Rotary Council on legislation has been very busy!
We will have our charter ceremony and a booth in the house of friendship at the district conference in May. Check out the conference at the district web site and register to attend if you can make it. Check with Bob on participating at the booth and what we will have on display in our booth! So far we will have a 4’x6’ map of the USA with markers pointing to each city in which we have members, our servant leadership points in an 11 x 17 poster, our intro page in an 11 x 17 poster, DG Gail’s invite letter in a 24 x 36 poster, a globe and our club theme banner. We will also be adding a brochure that E-Club Member June is working on as a take away handout. There have been 2 teams since the request was made February 7th working on the theme. And it’s now posted on our web site, check it out and thanks to fellow club members Liz, Tom and Christina for getting “er” done! It will also be on display at our booth.
Club Officer Elections are coming to a close. We are electing President 2016-2017, President Elect (president 2017-2018), Treasurer, Secretary and Vice President!

Are you familiar with the 3 “T’s” of giving?
“Time, talent and treasure.”
In today’s youth sports these 3 aspects of giving may be more important than ever.
And if you were thinking the only way to give or donate to a youth sports activity was with money, think again! Here are some examples of the 3 “T’s” that are not necessarily just about money.
Time: where would youth sports be without the time the many volunteers put in each year? There is a myriad of volunteer positions that without copious hours of volunteerism our youth sports activities wouldn’t happen. Many of these positions are behind the scenes and go unheralded.
Without the volunteer board members of the league or organization of your child’s chosen sports endeavor there would be no activities!
We have all heard that, “time is money”. So what is the value of a volunteers giving of their time? You can put a dollar amount on anything but putting a value on supporting youth sports endeavors and how they impact youth to me is next to impossible.
Talent: along with volunteered time there come the talents of many. This can range from coaches, officials, accountants to administrators. And let’s not leave out “Talented” parents.
It’s easy to see or experience the talents of the coaches and referees but have you really thought about the talents that are needed to run the organization? Not everyone is or has the talent to administrate or facilitate the orchestrating of the multiple positions that make your youth groups board.
The sharing of a personal gift or skill, that’s the talent being given by many volunteers.
Treasure: This is the one area that most people relate money to as being the main treasure one can give. And without those generous cash donations youth sports would be far from being successful.
But there are many treasures that are not monetary.
Where would we be without the many treasures of parks and rec., city and school district? I am referring to the fields, the courts, the gyms and the other facilities they make available for our youth sports programs. There is a lot that goes into keeping these facilities available; everything from upkeep to renovations.
Many equipment and uniform providers offer discounts to youth organizations. That sure makes a big difference when spread across hundreds of youth sports participants.
And let’s not forget transportation, gas and vehicle upkeep are definitely monetarily intense.
The 3 “T’s” of giving; maybe you can find a niche in one of these areas and give to a worthwhile endeavor, youth sports.

SOME BIO ON MARJORIE A CRAIG
I VISITED MOMBASA, KENYA IN 2000 AS A TOURIST FOR 2 WEEKS. PRIOR TO VISITING I ACQUAINTED MYSELF WITH AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE CHALLENGES VULNERABLE CHILDREN ENCOUNTERED THERE. THIS WAS IN KEEPING WITH MY CONCERN FOR OUR LOCAL CHILDREN AND THE MANY YEARS OF VOLUNTEER WORK SERVING THEM THROUGH COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IN BASIC EDUCATION WITH A FOCUS ON READING, MATHEMATICS, GARDENING, AND SCIENCE. THIS PROFOUND EXPERIENCE IN KENYA LED ME TO DEVELOP A HEALTH AND HYGIENE PROGRAM TO SERVE AT RISK KENYAN CHILDREN.
IN KENYA I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE A TIGHT BUDGET AND WAS UNABLE TO GO ON A "BIG SAFARI; BUT WAS ABLE TO AFFORD A "WALKING SAFARI". OUR GUIDE TOOK US TO MANY VILLAGES AND I SAW UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL THE CHILDREN, SOME OF THEIR PARENTS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT. I SAW SOMETHING ELSE AS I WATCHED THEIR CHILDHOOD CURIOSITY, ENTHUSIASM, AND BEAUTY; I SAW MYSELF. THEIR LIVES AND MY CHILDHOOD SHARED A LOT IN COMMON SINCE I GREW UP IN RURAL ALABAMA IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THEM AND KNEW BEFORE I LEFT, I HAD TO RETURN TO THEM. IN ELEVEN MONTHS I ARRIVED BACK IN MOMBASA FOR MY FIRST VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE. SOME OF THEIR PRESSING NEEDS INCLUDED BASIC HYGIENE, SANITATION, CLEAN WATER, EDUCATION ON THE PREVENTION OF HIV/AIDS, MALARIA, FOOD, AND NEEDS ASSOCIATED WITH POVERTY.
MY OBSERVATIONS WERE PARTIALLY SHAPED BY MY BACKGROUND AND MY BELIEF THAT WE ALL CAN ASSIST OTHERS IN OUR OWN WAY IF THE DESIRE IS STRONG ENOUGH. MY BACKGROUND IS IN NURSING AND EDUCATION. I EARNED A MASTERS IN NURSING AND HAVE EXPERIENCE IN TRADITIONAL CLINICAL NURSING, PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING, TEACHING AND COUNSELING. IN ADDITION I HAVE A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE IN CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE. THERE IN KENYA I SAW A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO USE ALL MY TALENTS, INTERESTS, HEART AND SOUL TO HELP THE CHILDREN, TO WALK WITH THEM ON A MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR LIVES, AND, MINE AS WELL.
ON MY RETURN HOME I SHARED MY EXPERIENCES WITH OTHERS-FAMILY, FRIENDS, FAITH COMMUNITIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND CLASSMATES. MANY SUPPORTED MY SERVICE, SOME RETURNED TO KENYA WITH ME ON MISSIONS.
AFTER OUR 2004 MISSION, I GATHERED MY COURAGE, AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS, I FILED INCORPORATION PAPERS WITH THE IRS SEEKING NON-PROFIT STATUS; WE WERE APPROVED.
I MOVED FROM SAN JOSE TO PINE GROVE, AND A FORMER COLLEAGUE FROM SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY CONTACTED DAVE THOMAS, ASSISTANT GOVERNOR IN OUR DISTRICT. HE INVITED ME TO AMADOR UPCOUNTRY ROTARY CLUB MEETING WHERE I SHARED MY SERVICE IN KENYA. THE REST IS HISTORY. OUR CLUB, AS WELL AS IONE, PLYMOUTH, JACKSON, AND INTERACT HAVE ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORTED OUR WORK IN KENYA.
I WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER IN AMADOR UPCOUNTRY SERVING AS CHAIR OF SEVERAL COMMITTEES, SERVED MY YEAR AS PRESIDENT.

This last year June, Steve, Erin and family along with Janis and Jody clocked nearly 200 hours of volunteer time serving at Fallon Daily Bread! AWESOME!
Liz and Tommy helped launch E Readers in their local High school library and are looking into a 3rd grade dictionary program this next year
Katherine started her doctorate in physical therapy
Christina has made the rounds to the local Rotary clubs in the Bend Oregon area promoting and representing the E-CLUB
Marjorie has been ever so active in continuing her focus on assisting those in need in Africa
Club in motion…… this last year
We partnered with The Fallon club to help provide scholarships to local high school students
We bought a new convection oven and warming tray oven for the Fallon Daily Bread to help in serving thousands of meals each year to those in need
We exceeded our goal for foundation giving and donated $1260 while donating $100 to Polio plus
We held our first fundraising raffle which was quite successful raising about $2000

Welcome to Rotary: YOU ARE - “Rotary Serving Humanity”
“Why you are, is where you were and when”……….
Or something like that!
Before “diversity” became the buzz word it is today, I attended a management seminar that basically helped with understanding why some people are different and how to relate to them. It went on to focus on what we are and how we act might be based on the impact of emotional life experiences and how they imprinted upon us. Well, it must be somewhat right in that of all the seminars and trainings I have been too I have remembered this seminar that had me engaged in a demonstration of an all-out yelling match with the presenter for a very long time! Consequently this has helped lead me to believe this has a lot to do with our choices to which philanthropic endeavors we relate to and support.
I have been to a regular club meeting with a highly emotional presentation, yes one that you might have called a tear jerker, on Rotary’s wheel chair program that saw 22 wheel chairs at $75 each being sponsored on the spot! It was a WOW, presentation and meeting! I have also been to a fund raising function with well over 100 attendees that turned into the proverbial “garage sale”, one that in my opinion did not make the emotional connection it needed to make it a super success and appeal to the crowd. Even though in I felt the cause in every way was just as worthy as the Rotary Wheel Chair program.
So where am I going with this? Most of us have had these emotional life experiences that has transpired into our own individual (and maybe group) passionate causes that we want to support, that might not push the “hot button” of others in that they may not have experienced the emotional impact event that we have experienced. We also may not have the opportunity to make that impact felt by others. But that doesn’t mean we can’t work to further those causes through the resources that Rotary offers. It’s just a matter of finding the right resources, networking and having the right timing to make things happen.
That is why I would ask you during this next Rotary year to forward your interests and passions to the club so we can help research avenues and support that we can use to make you and or your team’s interests come to fruition.

Many clubs have a Rotary Work day scheduled in the month of April. It’s usually a hands on project that gets them out into the community. Check your local clubs website, this event is usually posted and advertised in PSA’s. Contact them and see if you can assist……………. what a good way to get to know your local Rotarians by working side by side in a community Service Above Self endeavor!

Christina’s horse Boom has made her way back up to Central Point and appears to remember she was a cutting horse with things to do including chasing cattle with Christina in the saddle! Happy Trails!

The items for the matching grant have been selected and consist of a convection oven and a heating cabinet for food trays. We received very generous discount on the items!
Once school gets back in session we will get an update on our E Reader project which now has the readers, the holders and a charging station for the beta launch received at the school for Green River High School. Thanks again to those who donated to this effort.

Club in motion……
We have chosen Fallon Daily Bread as our matching grants project. It will consist of new appliances for the kitchen and will consume the entire $2K in matching dollars or a total of $4K for the project. I really like it when we get our APF dollars coming back to the club! Thanks Rhino for getting the grant taken care of.
Our E Reader project now has the readers for the beta launch received at the school for Green River High School. Thanks again to those who donated to this effort.
Our Super Bowl Raffle has launch – and tickets are selling like gangbusters. We are currently well over half way sold out after the first week of selling………. Way to go team!
We received $260 for our Foundations funds from the Smith Valley Club event.

I had a conversation with one of our members about how special our pets are too many of us and how a catastrophic veterinary incident can be most devastating especially when the cost is beyond the financial wherewithal of their owners. To many pet owners their pet is there only companion and just like family. Welcome to Rotary: YOU ARE - “Rotary Serving Humanity”
“At the Westinghouse laboratories in New York, an interesting experiment was
conducted. A great bar of steel, eight feet long and weighing a half-ton was
suspended vertically from a chain. Parallel to it on a stout thread hung a cord
from an ordinary bottle weighing perhaps a half-ounce….Again and again the
small cork was swung against that huge steel bar. For a long time the bar hung
motionless but after 10 minutes a nervous chill seemed to go through the bar.
Another two minutes and the chill turned into plainly visible vibrations. Those vibrations increased in rapidity and in strength until after 25 minutes the great bar
began to swing like the pendulum of a grandfather clock….Rotarians, you and
your club projects may seem at times like the cork tapping against the bar, but tap
you must, and if you tap long enough the bar will swing.”

Please find herewith the presented change of an addition to our bylaws. You have until midnight Pacific time tonight to vote on adding the following to our bylaws.
Section 4a – If determined by the board that an officer elect, director elect, board or officer vacancy would be best filled by special election it can authorize a special election for said position by giving 3 days’ notice to the cub via e mail or other approved method for nominations, posting or delivering by e mail said nominations then implementing an election during the following 3 days during which time voting will take place culminating on the 3rd day at 6 pm Pacific time. The nominee receiving the majority of the votes received by e mail and upon board approval shall be elected to that position. Results will be posted and or emailed within 3 days of the end of the election period.

Yes, July 1st marks the beginning of a new Rotary Year. “Rotary Serving Humanity” And this one is extra special as we look to eradicate Polio from around the world and begin our E-Club’s first true year of operation.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Things have changed from when I first became a Rotarian. We didn’t much use e mail, no Club Runner and everything was communicated and recorded on paper and old computer spread sheets! WOW!
As the first E-Club in our District we have made a historical change as to how the future of Rotary may be impacted. An example is that you are attending this meeting “virtually” with the ability to reach out to all of our club members and most Rotarians around the world almost instantaneously to discuss relevant and not so relevant topics!
All the data, directories and information we have is now for the most part kept electronically, mostly in and on Club Runner as well as the RI “cloud”. I kind of miss the yearly book style directory!
If you recall in one of our past meetings a link came out that took you to a sight that talked about the future of Rotary. Go back and find that link and check out what it has to say about us and what our e club means to the future of Rotary.
We are the future and I Thank You for being a member of our club and Rotary. Let’s make our first year successful and an example of what “Rotary Serving Humanity” is all about!

Rotary Serving Humanity
Rotary Truly is Unique
Each Rotary year ends with an International Convention filled with inspirational speakers, informative breakout sessions and exciting entertainment. However, after attending five such conventions, two of which were outside the U.S., I find one aspect the most awe-inspiring. That is the parade of flags. Each country in which Rotary has a club is announced and the national flag is paraded around the convention and shown on a big screen. With the exception of the host country and that of the R.I. President this is done in alphabetical order. It is amazing to see this display and realize that nowhere else on earth can you see such a display without any underlying message except fellowship and serving humanity. True at the Olympics each represented country has its flag carried by its athletes during the opening ceremony. However, there fierce competition with statistics maintained by country undermines the feeling of fellowship. Likewise, at the United Stations each country has its own political agenda. Only at Rotary can countries that are otherwise in conflict with each other meet with common goals such as the eradication of polio.
This year in Seoul during the opening ceremonies I sat next to a large group Rotarians from Egypt each wearing identical brightly colored blazers. Later while standing in various lines I stood next to and spoke to Rotarians from India, China, the Congo and many other nations. This truly is the International aspect of Rotary International.
A New Rotary Year Begins
July starts a new Rotary year. On July 9 we will have an Engaging Emerging Leaders Summit. Participants will discover new ideas to help Clubs design programs that will not only attract new leaders but retain members and engage them in new and exciting ways. Information is available on the District website. I am also excited to start my club visits in July.

Rotary Serving Humanity
2016-2017 Rotary International President John Germ has selected Rotary Serving Humanity as his theme. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines humanity as “all people.” The term “all people” obviously includes people in our local community. Clubs and Rotarians are free to place great emphasis on providing services in the local community as well as internationally.
Important Milestones
On May 4, 1987 the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issued a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership. By 2010 more than 199,000 women are members of Rotary clubs worldwide, with an increasing number serving as district governors. More recently there have been women as RI Directors, Vice President and Treasurer. Our own District had its first women District Governor, Lydia M. Frenzel, in 1997-1998 with four additional women serving as District Governors in subsequent years.
The seed for The Rotary Foundation was planted by Rotary President Arch Klumph at the Atlanta Convention in 1917. From the first gift of $26.50, the Foundation's assets have grown significantly, and more than $3 billion has been spent on programs and projects — transforming millions of lives around the globe. This Rotary year we will celebrate the Centennial of the Rotary Foundation. Ending Polio continues to be a major focus of the Foundation. Will 2017 be the last year in which we see a case of polio? Only time will tell but we should not give up the fight until the job is done.
Our own Rotary Club of Reno will also celebrate its Centennial. It was chartered on August 1, 1916. Rotary International President John Germ is scheduled to attend the celebration.

A sixth generation Nevadan, Rachel currently serves as the Executive Director of Churchill Economic Development Authority, is a freelance writer, and teaches Political Science at WNC. She has served on the Fallon City Council, taught high school and middle school English and lived to tell about it, as well as Core Humanities at the University of Nevada. She was part of the launch of the Fallon Star Press weekly newspaper with Anne Pershing, and worked as a campaign manager for John Ensign, responsible for coordinating the campaign in 15 rural Nevada counties and then served on his Senate staff, managing the Carson City office. She cut her teeth in politics running the Lahontan Valley Environmental Alliance for several years working on water issues in Northern Nevada. With experience in economic development, environmental and water policy, as well as her experience in education and with the media, Rachel brings a well-rounded perspective to her endeavors. She is the mother of a rugby-playing neuroscientist, a well-drilling welder, an eighth grade singing diva, and a nine-year-old Great Dane.

So far we will have a 4’x6’ map of the USA with markers pointing to each city in which we have members, our servant leadership points in an 11 x 17 poster, our intro page in an 11 x 17 poster, DG Gail’s invite letter in a 24 x 36 poster, a globe and our club theme banner. We will also be adding a brochure that E-Club Member June is working on as a take away handout. There have been 2 teams since the request was made February 7th working on the theme. And it’s now posted on our web site, check it out and thanks to fellow club members Liz, Tom and Christina for getting “er” done! It will also be on display at our booth.

Are you familiar with the 3 “T’s” of giving?
“Time, talent and treasure.”
In today’s youth sports these 3 aspects of giving may be more important than ever.
And if you were thinking the only way to give or donate to a youth sports activity was with money, think again! Here are some examples of the 3 “T’s” that are not necessarily just about money.
Time: where would youth sports be without the time the many volunteers put in each year? There is a myriad of volunteer positions that without copious hours of volunteerism our youth sports activities wouldn’t happen. Many of these positions are behind the scenes and go unheralded.
Without the volunteer board members of the league or organization of your child’s chosen sports endeavor there would be no activities!
We have all heard that, “time is money”. So what is the value of a volunteers giving of their time? You can put a dollar amount on anything but putting a value on supporting youth sports endeavors and how they impact youth to me is next to impossible.
Talent: along with volunteered time there come the talents of many. This can range from coaches, officials, accountants to administrators. And let’s not leave out “Talented” parents.
It’s easy to see or experience the talents of the coaches and referees but have you really thought about the talents that are needed to run the organization? Not everyone is or has the talent to administrate or facilitate the orchestrating of the multiple positions that make your youth groups board.
The sharing of a personal gift or skill, that’s the talent being given by many volunteers.
Treasure: This is the one area that most people relate money to as being the main treasure one can give. And without those generous cash donations youth sports would be far from being successful.
But there are many treasures that are not monetary.
Where would we be without the many treasures of parks and rec., city and school district? I am referring to the fields, the courts, the gyms and the other facilities they make available for our youth sports programs. There is a lot that goes into keeping these facilities available; everything from upkeep to renovations.
Many equipment and uniform providers offer discounts to youth organizations. That sure makes a big difference when spread across hundreds of youth sports participants.
And let’s not forget transportation, gas and vehicle upkeep are definitely monetarily intense.
The 3 “T’s” of giving; maybe you can find a niche in one of these areas and give to a worthwhile endeavor, youth sports.

Rotary Minute: What have you learned from being a Rotarian?

I believe I am safe in assuming that most of you are not regular readers of the Journal of Leadership Studies. Nor that you had the pleasure of perusing the article in that magazine’s Winter 2014 issue titled “Followership in Leadership Studies: A Case of Leader-Follower Trade Approach.” To save you the trouble, let me summarize the argument put forward by the author, Petros G. Malakyan:
While an abundance of research is devoted to leaders – an entire literature, in fact –almost nothing is written about followers.
The reason for this is not particularly elusive. From presidents to mob bosses, from generals to drug lords, we love narratives that center on figures who hold, or aspire to hold, absolute power.
This bias is even more pronounced in the world of business, which is predicated on the notion that worth can be measured by your place in the pecking order. People don’t think about how they function as followers because the very idea that they might be followers – as opposed to leaders-in-waiting – strikes them as insulting.
The huge and unsung irony here is that most leadership studies conclude that lousy followers wind up making lousy leaders. “He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander,” is how Aristotle put it a couple of thousand years ago.
This dynamic is particularly fraught for Rotarians, because Rotary is, by its nature, filled with people who are leaders in their profession or their business who must adapt, or re-adapt, to being followers in order to function within the organization. For this reason, I’ve spent several weeks studying the concept of followership and trying to compile a few crucial tips to being a good follower.
It’s certainly fair to ask what my qualifications are for this task, so let me set out my bona fides as a follower. Ahem. Aside from editing my college newspaper, I’ve never actually been a leader of anything – and that includes my family, a small, volatile start-up operation that is indisputably helmed by my wife.
What’s more, I make my living mostly as a freelance writer. To remain employed, I have to be not only a good follower, but a good follower to about two dozen leaders, each of whom has a different style. The only thing they appear to have in common is a tendency to ignore my emails.

There are four essential qualities to being a good follower, at least according to Robert Kelley, a scholar at Carnegie Mellon University who enjoys the odd distinction of being the world’s leading authority on followership.
A couple of these are pretty straightforward. Good followers have to be committed to the mission of the group, and they have to be competent in their given role. The more nuanced attributes are what Kelley refers to as self-management and courage. Good followers have to be able to work independently and maintain their ethical standards.
The most common misconception Kelley encounters is that being a “good follower” is tantamount to passive obedience. In fact, a good follower must be engaged in an active collaboration with the leader, and that requires critical thinking. Followers must be candid with superiors, especially in offering constructive criticism that might aid the larger cause. In the absence of critical thought, groupthink inevitably takes hold.
What’s most fun about reading Kelley’s work is the spot-on taxonomy he provides of follower types. Anyone who works in an office will recognize them.
The “sheep,” for example, require constant supervision. The “yes people” put blind loyalty before all else. Then there are the “pragmatics,” who wait until a consensus has emerged before taking a position on anything. And, of course, the “alienated,” who are motivated mostly by grievance, the not-very-secret sentiment that they are the ones who should be in charge.
My sense is that most followers struggle with all of these tendencies. They are natural responses to the dilemma of the follower, which is that you are expected to devote yourself entirely to a cause that brings more glory (and riches and a bigger office) to the leader, not to you.
This expectation may be especially difficult for Americans to accept because it runs up against a basic tenet of our culture: exceptionalism. As a political system, of course, capitalism has been wildly successful in motivating people to strive for greatness. But it also defines greatness in narrow terms. To put it bluntly, you are the top dog or a nobody.
But the hallmark of what Kelley calls the effective follower is precisely this: an ability to check your ego at the door, to remain positive and self-motivated even if you’re not setting the agenda. This person succeeds even without the presence of a leader precisely because she embodies the ideals of leadership.
Kelley’s point is ultimately the same as Aristotle’s: The key lessons of leadership are learned as a follower.

As a resident of New England for going on two decades, I’ve been a witness to one of the most striking exemplars of this maxim. His name is Tom Brady. The quarterback of the New England Patriots is widely regarded as one of the best players in history and the league’s most natural leader: gifted, smart, hardworking, and able to inspire the best in his teammates.
But fans tend to forget how the Brady saga began. When he came to the University of Michigan, Tom Terrific was a tall, gawky kid from a private California high school. He was listed as seventh on the depth chart and spent his first two years as a backup.
Despite two outstanding seasons in college, Brady wasn’t considered athletic enough to make the pros. He was lucky to get drafted late in the sixth round. He arrived in training camp with three quarterbacks ahead of him, including a star named Drew Bledsoe.
Once again, Brady accepted his role as a follower. He never complained to coaches or allowed bitterness to infect his work ethic. He carried Bledsoe’s clipboard and remained eager to learn from him.
Early in his second season as a pro, Brady was called upon to replace Bledsoe, who had been injured during a game. Within a few weeks, it was clear that Brady would hold the job for the rest of his career. But the seeds of his success as a leader were planted during those months and years of toil as a backup, when Brady made the largely invisible decision to embrace the role of a follower.
This is not to say that Brady has always adhered to the highest ethical standards – the “Deflategate” saga clearly raised questions about his willingness to win at all costs. But most of those criticisms have come from outside the sport. His teammates have supported him unconditionally.
You can trace the same pattern in the lives of figures such as Joshua (who faithfully served Moses and led the Jews into the Promised Land), Winston Churchill (who remained loyal to his predecessor Neville Chamberlain but questioned his appeasement of Hitler), and even Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. They all succeeded as leaders only after having to learn the lessons of good followership.

I fibbed a bit when I said I have no experience as a leader. As a teacher, I’m technically a leader whenever I step in front of a class. But any success I’ve had as a teacher arises directly from my experiences as a student.
This started years ago, when I took my first writing workshop. Our leader was a novelist named John Dufresne, one of my literary heroes. I expected, and hoped, that the class would consist of Dufresne holding forth to his acolytes.
Instead, he pushed us acolytes to take the lead, serving more as a guide and swooping in to steer the conversation only when we veered off course. It was from him that I learned the essential goal of teaching, which isn’t to show students how brilliant you are, but to inspire their own brilliance.
A class succeeds not because the leader has all the answers (thank God), but because followers come to recognize the value of developing their own critical faculties. Without exception, the students who learn how to critique with both ruthless and tender precision are the ones who wind up publishing books down the line. I’ve seen this pattern play out over and over in my own workshops.
So far as I can determine, being a good follower boils down to acceptance. You have to be OK with the idea that you can achieve simply by contributing.
To offer your full devotion as a follower isn’t an act of acquiescence or resignation. On the contrary, it’s evidence of a healthy ego, of a person bright enough not to need a constant spotlight.
The question for all of us is whether we can find the grace required to be a follower in good faith – to accept that cooperation is not the enemy of ambition and that recognition never brings us enduring happiness unless it comes from within.

SOME BIO ON MARJORIE A CRAIG
I VISITED MOMBASA, KENYA IN 2000 AS A TOURIST FOR 2 WEEKS. PRIOR TO VISITING I ACQUAINTED MYSELF WITH AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE CHALLENGES VULNERABLE CHILDREN ENCOUNTERED THERE. THIS WAS IN KEEPING WITH MY CONCERN FOR OUR LOCAL CHILDREN AND THE MANY YEARS OF VOLUNTEER WORK SERVING THEM THROUGH COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IN BASIC EDUCATION WITH A FOCUS ON READING, MATHEMATICS, GARDENING, AND SCIENCE. THIS PROFOUND EXPERIENCE IN KENYA LED ME TO DEVELOP A HEALTH AND HYGIENE PROGRAM TO SERVE AT RISK KENYAN CHILDREN.
IN KENYA I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE A TIGHT BUDGET AND WAS UNABLE TO GO ON A "BIG SAFARI; BUT WAS ABLE TO AFFORD A "WALKING SAFARI". OUR GUIDE TOOK US TO MANY VILLAGES AND I SAW UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL THE CHILDREN, SOME OF THEIR PARENTS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT. I SAW SOMETHING ELSE AS I WATCHED THEIR CHILDHOOD CURIOSITY, ENTHUSIASM, AND BEAUTY; I SAW MYSELF. THEIR LIVES AND MY CHILDHOOD SHARED A LOT IN COMMON SINCE I GREW UP IN RURAL ALABAMA IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THEM AND KNEW BEFORE I LEFT, I HAD TO RETURN TO THEM. IN ELEVEN MONTHS I ARRIVED BACK IN MOMBASA FOR MY FIRST VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE. SOME OF THEIR PRESSING NEEDS INCLUDED BASIC HYGIENE, SANITATION, CLEAN WATER, EDUCATION ON THE PREVENTION OF HIV/AIDS, MALARIA, FOOD, AND NEEDS ASSOCIATED WITH POVERTY.
MY OBSERVATIONS WERE PARTIALLY SHAPED BY MY BACKGROUND AND MY BELIEF THAT WE ALL CAN ASSIST OTHERS IN OUR OWN WAY IF THE DESIRE IS STRONG ENOUGH. MY BACKGROUND IS IN NURSING AND EDUCATION. I EARNED A MASTERS IN NURSING AND HAVE EXPERIENCE IN TRADITIONAL CLINICAL NURSING, PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING, TEACHING AND COUNSELING. IN ADDITION I HAVE A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE IN CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE. THERE IN KENYA I SAW A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO USE ALL MY TALENTS, INTERESTS, HEART AND SOUL TO HELP THE CHILDREN, TO WALK WITH THEM ON A MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR LIVES, AND, MINE AS WELL.
ON MY RETURN HOME I SHARED MY EXPERIENCES WITH OTHERS-FAMILY, FRIENDS, FAITH COMMUNITIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND CLASSMATES. MANY SUPPORTED MY SERVICE, SOME RETURNED TO KENYA WITH ME ON MISSIONS.
AFTER OUR 2004 MISSION, I GATHERED MY COURAGE, AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS, I FILED INCORPORATION PAPERS WITH THE IRS SEEKING NON-PROFIT STATUS; WE WERE APPROVED.
I MOVED FROM SAN JOSE TO PINE GROVE, AND A FORMER COLLEAGUE FROM SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY CONTACTED DAVE THOMAS, ASSISTANT GOVERNOR IN OUR DISTRICT. HE INVITED ME TO AMADOR UPCOUNTRY ROTARY CLUB MEETING WHERE I SHARED MY SERVICE IN KENYA. THE REST IS HISTORY. OUR CLUB, AS WELL AS IONE, PLYMOUTH, JACKSON, AND INTERACT HAVE ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORTED OUR WORK IN KENYA.
I WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER IN AMADOR UPCOUNTRY SERVING AS CHAIR OF SEVERAL COMMITTEES, SERVED MY YEAR AS PRESIDENT.

Bringing education to rural Mexican area, one school at a time
Carolina Gonzales Rivas, a scholarship recipient and member of the Rotary Club of Jaltemba-La Peñita, Mexico, talks about how Rotary has influenced her life.
When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation.
In addition, Rotary clubs from the United States and Mexico have been investing in the education of children in Nayarit since 2003, providing scholarships and libraries and rehabbing school buildings.
The lasting impact in the region is apparent.
“I think the combination of the scholarship program and Rotary’s interaction with the schools has made things seem possible, has changed the climate of education here, and the way the people think about education,” Day says.
One example of Rotary’s impact is Carolina Gonzales Rivas. She was able to attend high school thanks to Day’s scholarship program. Rivas is currently working on her master’s degree and has recently joined the Rotary Club of Jaltemba-La Peñita.
“I think that what Rotary is doing by supporting education and supporting students is to have a vision for life, to have aspirations – that’s what is going to change the world,” Rivas says.
The Rotary Club of Berkeley, in California, USA, along with the Bahia de Jaltemba-La Peñita club and other North American clubs, recently tackled their largest project to date: a monthlong renovation of La Preparatoria 20 de Noviembre , a high school in the village of Las Varas. Funding came from a Rotary Foundation global grant and the financial contributions of six Rotary districts covering the 25 Rotary clubs that participated.
A total of 90 volunteers including the school’s teachers, students, and students’ parents, improved the old buildings and built three laboratory classrooms. All three feature new equipment and technology and can be used by local residents as well as students.
Eduardo Dominguez, a member of the Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita club, says one of the biggest rewards of these efforts is the fact that a college education is now a real possibility for local students.
“There are many young people in Mexico with huge potential and with much to give, as long as they are given an opportunity,” Dominguez says. “Rotarians are helping those opportunities to occur, for [these young people] to become contributors to their communities.”

Positive Sports Parenting
Not so long ago I had a less then positive conversation with one of my daughters. It didn’t have anything to do with sports and it ended up with her going to her room (voluntarily!) and me writing this column!
Positive parenting! What a challenge. How do we overcome that relationship with our young athletes that has us cutting to the chase of what went wrong before we make an attempt to hear or recognize what went right?
They are our kids, we know them best and expect the most from them. Remember the old song “You always hurt the one you love, the one you shouldn’t hurt at all”. Maybe there is something to that old tune that hits closer to home then we would like.
If we expect our kids to be of good sportsmanship and have good ethical conduct we should expect the same of ourselves. That may be tougher than it sounds!
Especially, when it comes to being a “Positive Parent”.
Our young athletes may not always have their best game and we should be ready to acknowledge that without jumping to conclusions. How?
Before you begin check your, “Mood-O-Meter”! Are you mentally up to the challenge of being a positive parent today? There’s nothing worse than having a bad day at home or work and bringing a bad mood to the game or match.
First: by acknowledging that the rules you expect your child to abide by are rules that you follow and expect other parents and fans to follow (the old adage here: lead by example)
Second: acknowledge that they are going to be competing with other athletes in a sports competition but not for your acceptance or loyalty.
Third: By getting involved in what they are doing in training and practice sessions so that you have firsthand knowledge of the effort and progress they are making. Some of these skills are quite challenging to master. Go ahead and you try a bicycle kick, slide tackle or heading the ball.
Forth: Cheer, for both teams and all players when a good play is made. And keep a “tight lip” if an official makes a mistake (It may have been me that made that bad call)!
Fifth: This is a tough one; don’t do something that is going to embarrass you or your young athlete!
Sixth: something I have learned going to local High School Soccer games, acknowledge the teams effort. A line of parents and fans on the sideline giving “High Fives” whether they win or lose is awesome.
Last but not least, and back to the beginning of the conversation with the kids, LISTEN. See what they thought of their performance first. Then point out what you saw that went well. The “not so goods”, “flush em’ down the drain”. And I really mean orchestrating the motion of flushing them down the drain. Are they really worth bringing up?
The “not so goods”: Those are mine and any other coach’s responsibility. We’ll be working on those and some pretty good “grass stains” at the next training session.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,
We’re delighted to report that [today] Nigeria has passed one year with no new cases of the wild poliovirus.
This is the longest the country has ever gone without a case of polio and a critical step on the path toward a polio-free Africa. We’ve come a long way since the bleak years when the virus reached its peak. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa- three quarters of all cases in the world.
We congratulate Rotarians who have donated $688.5 million to fight polio throughout Africa, including more than $200 million to Nigeria. We congratulate Rotarians from Africa and around the world who have also devoted countless hours to immunize the children who now have the opportunity for healthier, happier lives.
With the ambitious scope of Rotary’s PolioPlus program, our efforts are having a far-reaching, transformative impact beyond the eradication of polio.
With the infrastructure put in place by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Nigeria not only reduced its polio caseload by 90% in 2014, but it also successfully thwarted the world’s most lethal Ebola outbreak to date, in only 90 days, a response faster than even the U.S., and rightly praised by the World Health Organization as ‘world-class’.
In Nigeria and elsewhere, the Initiative provides a blueprint to reach all children with a package of lifesaving vaccines and health interventions. This is a vital step on the path to human development, as we know that with improved public health, more resources can be channeled towards education and economic growth.
If the stringent World Health Organization testing criteria are met, then Nigeria could be removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September of this year.
However, our work is not done. We know that polio can easily return, with devastating consequences, if we don’t stamp it out now.
We must act, as Rotarians do, to build on the progress made and stop polio once and for all. We have a narrow window of opportunity to achieve this, and if we fail, we could witness up to 200,000 cases a year in the near future.
So how can we finally make history and end polio now?
Today, we must protect the progress made in Nigeria, and support Pakistan and Afghanistan, the other two remaining polio-endemic countries.
Protecting progress means enhancing surveillance, routine immunization, and community engagement in Nigeria and other countries where transmission has been stopped.
Supporting Pakistan and Afghanistan means full political and financial commitment to eradicating polio; vaccination of all children in these countries; high quality surveillance, and the accomplishment of all the expert recommendations as part of the GPEI’s Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan.

This all requires time, energy and investment. Pakistan’s budget requirements for polio eradication activities from 2016-2018 amounts to $305.7 million, and if we can raise this sum now, a polio-free world will reap financial savings of US$50 billion over the next 20 years and prove what’s possible when the global community comes together to improve children’s lives.
