Report on Meeting 3297

Attack of the Killer Turtles

Last Tuesday our guest speaker was Claudia Santori who was introduced by Rotarian Jan Colwell. Cladia spoke to our club last year and has returned to our district to conduct further research into the status of River Murray turtles.
There are three type of turtles found in the River Murray, Broad Shell Turtles which are carnivorous, Long Neck Turtles which are also carnivorous and Short Neck Turtles which are omnivorous.
Throughout the world 61%of the 356 species are considered threatened. In Australia 50% of the 25 species are threatened.
Turtles are under threat from numerous areas including, foxes, carp, road kill, low river flows and drought.
Ways of providing solutions to their plight include invasive species management, nest protection, fences, artificial islands. Also being implemented are incubating and hatching in captivity.
there are many questions still unanswered in relation to turtles including, where do they go, how far do they travel and the affects of captivity.
Claudia's research has been attempting to find answers to these and other questions.
So far she has determined the following in the Murraylands area.
Hatchlings travel a lot moving up to 800m in a day, favoured habitat includes muddy vegetated protected areas and captive turtles are likely to be predated.
Claudia concluded that the "Headstarting" process can be successful provided the hatchlings are released immediately. The decline of turtles is significant and need urgent action. Without turtles are waterways will become polluted as they are scavengers.
Chair Jan then thanked Claudia for again providing a most enlightening talk.

Magdalina Graduation

Dear All at Rotary Club of Murray Bridge

We are just months away from Magdalina’s Form 6 graduation from The School of St Jude and the completion of her Secondary academic scholarship.

The Form 6 Graduation will be happening on Saturday of 25th May 2019 at our secondary school Usa River campus just outside Arusha.

With less than 2% of students in Tanzania completing their secondary education, we invite you to join us in recognising this incredible achievement and what it symbolises for both Magdalina and her family.

At present, our Form 6 students are getting ready for their coming final examinations; a challenge that Magdalina has been able to embrace because of your generosity and dedication towards her education.

If you’d like to wish Magdalina congratulation, please feel free to reply to this email before Monday 20th May and we will pass on your congratulations and best wishes.

If you are joining us for the graduation event, we look forward to welcoming you to St Jude’s in May.

Even when our Form 6 students have been very busy preparing for the National Examinations, we made sure to capture a few final shots of them in their St Jude’s uniform. Attached is a photo of Magdalina in the final days as a secondary student at St Jude’s.

Best wishes,
Grace
