Report on Meeting 3294

Meeting Report - 3924

Peter Jarvis from the Rotary Club of Barmera gave his talk on being a PTR.
What is a PTR? A PTR is a Permanent Relief Teacher which means he is available to fill any teacher vacancies from Reception to year 12 in any subject. Peter is one of over 70 PTR's in South Australia and one of 12 Area PTR's that covers a 250km radius from their base school which in Peter's case is Barmera.
The difference between a TR (temporary relief teacher) and a PTR is that a TR can be called in to cover for 1 day as a PTR has a minimum of 3 days and up to 19 days (longer if required).
As Peter can be asked to cover a wide range of year levels and subject it is important to carry relevant information with you. Peter carries multiple USB memory sticks with a wide range of subjects along with other essential items. One of Peter's favourite items is Kenny. Kenny is a puppet that Peter uses when teaching with Reception and early years of Primary School as it allows the students to relax as they are often frightened by a new teacher.
Peter has been a PTR for some 30 years now and has had the pleasure on occasion to return to a school and teach children that he had taught in previous year levels.
Life as a PTR is varied, you spend a lot of time on the road but the best part is you get to make a difference, even if it is only for a short amount of time.
