  • Risk Management and Child Protection

Shiralee is also the club's Youth Protection Officer. She reminded us that the club must have a Risk Management Policy and that ideally all members should have both a Working With Children check and a Vulnerable Persons check. These are available from the Dept.  of Human Services, SA Screening Unit and they are viable for 5 years. The checks are Australia wide.

Both the YPO and the club Secretary keep a register of these checks. Should you require assistance with your application email Shiralee at  shezjudge@gmail.com

In order to protect oneself, never be alone with a minor.  Always travel with another Rotarian.

When the club enlists a new member details must be sent to the District Secretary (David Fenton) for checking.

Checks held with other organisations such as Hungry No More and Operation Flinders are valid across all organistations including Rotary.

Anyone who has a check please email a copy to the secretary (Florence Yeardley)and cc Shiralee.

If you do not have a check then you are unable to work with children or vulnerable persons.  The DG will speak to the club about these matters during his visit on Oct 25th.

  • District Grants
When districts 9520 and 9500 combined, an excess of funds became available so an extra run of funds is coming up.  The club needs to be thinking of a project now to make use of these funds.  The coke van may be eligible.

  • Upcoming Events

City to Summit - Thu 7th Oct

After discussion with Operation Flinders it was decided not to support this event.

  • RORP - Mark

Rod has forwarded Mark’s details of project to all Rotary Clubs in our District.

Mark will be a guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Adelaide to promote this project. Given the numbers and influence of members in this club this presentation should prove fruitful.

RORP Victoria is still harvesting playgrounds but are having difficulty sending them overseas due to COVID restrictions and blockages. Mark has indicated that we may be able to assist them to find an appropriate destination.

We have been offered three playgrounds in the Prospect area which have been deemed suitable and photographed.

DIK shed construction - Dave Gillies will transport and operate his Bobcat to dig the remaining 6 holes. Decided to do this on Wed 8th Sept, leaving Rotary Shed at 9:00am.

Repairs in hand Richard Yeardley

  • Fishing Competition -(Shawn, Richard and Dave HolthamNo progress yet. There was some concern about the impact of this event on local residents and close consultation may be needed.
  • Art Show -(Peter Schaefer, Marg Inglis, Carola, Shawn and Dave Gillies)
Meeting of sub committee has taken place. The first step is to set a date so a venue can be booked. We felt the first fortnight of April may be OK but at the Board meeting we were made aware that the District Conference is to be held from the 1st to the 3rd of April so these dates will need to be avoided. We may need to consider May.

This event is a long term commitment with very little profit in the first few years.

The Board has agreed to support this event provided there is no cost to the club in this year.

  • Future Events:
Callington Show - 31st Oct

Donut van - donuts and drinks.

Sophie’s Open Garden - Nov 6th - 8th

Setup marquees and signage, parking and Monday BBQ.

Conquer the Summit - date TBA (Dave Gillies)

Lights of Lobethal - Dec 12th - 23rd

We have been advised that we are to be invited back but there is some doubt it will go ahead in the current format.

Bunnings BBQ’s - no more on offer at this stage.

Jack Newton, Membership and Vocational Service Director

2 students from Cornerstone College were interviewed for NYSF.  Both have been accepted.  The students pay half of the fee and the club pays the other half. RC Blakiston has agreed to contribute and Karen will ask the RC Stirling to do the same.
  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
The club will sponsor one student this year not two due to lack of funds.  This year 2 students dropped out, one without telling anyone leaving the club to pay their bill.  Because of this we will now require a deposit form each entrant which will be refunded on their attendance.
  • Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment
The club does not have a student for this program yet.  Applicant will also be required to pay a refundable on attendance deposit.

Once students have committed to these programs they will be requested to assist with some volunteer work with the club before they attend.
  • Cornerstone Careers Expo
Karen and Rod attended but feel that in future young alumni should be sent to talk to the students.
  • Kick Start For Kids
Could donate the same as last year or gather a box of food from members' contributions to donate to MB and MB South schools.
  • Op Flinders and One and All
May have to look at later due to costs.
