GUEST SPEAKER
Director of New Generations Committee, Helen Marshall, introduced Shaun Counihan, Rotary Youth Leadership Award graduate. Shaun thanked the club for the privilege of sponsorship and the CEO of Hills Community Options , without whom he would never have heard of RYLA. When Shaun arrived at the Nunyara site at Belair he was nervous and didn't know what to expect, but was soon mingling with friendly faces all of whom appeared to be so intelligent and with such great aspirations that they appeared quite daunting. By the end of the week Shaun realised that they were all young people who can make a difference in the world.
From the seminars and speakers he focused on the importance of resilience- that things out of our control will shape us. Personal stories were shared - death, drug problems, alcohol abuse, domestic violence. To hear about these hardships and to see people who came through their experiences stronger and more resilient was uplifting. Shaun would like to grow his own capacity for resilience.
He learned to set big goals and how to plan to reach them. But also small goals - every day activities. These small accomplishments, the chore of the day, giving someone a hand; once accomplished one realises how important they are. One can get into a rut of not working towards anything so need to get the ball rolling.
He was surprised to learn about public speaking and getting on with people. He had fun and laughed a lot and will come away with memories of opening up and learning about each other. His take home lesson is how different everyone is. Don't judge people you don't know. everyone is just doing the best they can. learn to judge the action not the person. RYLA touches everyone involved and thankyou to Rotary.
