The Dunn Crypt, an update
John Dunn, miller, wheat merchant, and philanthropist, is often thought of as ‘the father of Mount Barker’.  He was born in Devon, England in 1802, into a large but poor farming family. He received a basic education before being apprenticed to a miller at the age of twelve. By 25 he was managing a steam-powered mill. He married in 1828. In the late 1830s Dunn heard good reports of successful farming in the Onkaparinga district of South Australia from several of his brothers, so decided to move his family there. With his wife and four children, he arrived on the Lysander in 1840.

Sally Harding delivered an update on the restoration of his crypt.

Council staff have been liaising for several years with the National Trust of SA (Mt Barker Branch) regarding the Dunn Crypt and its restoration.
The current Committee of the National Trust of SA (Mt Barker Branch) working with Council staff have redefined and agreed a new project scope. The Branch have now internally reached agreement that a project initiative that is focussed on preserving Mount Barker history and establishing a pioneer trail with Dunn as the centrepiece would be desirable.
The project initiative could include:
• Sealing of the crypt (a visual depiction of the contents is not being contemplated);
• Cleaning of the obelisk and other realistic restoration work (eg restoring the iron railings);
• Installation of an information board; • Installation of seating towards the summit;
• Clearing of other pioneer graves and a historical pathway established;
• Drainage work to ensure that further damage to pioneer graves doesn’t occur.

Jack and Mary attended the Rydges Hotel for the program's annual catch up.  The student we sponsor, Narelle, has completed her 3rd year.  As she is heavily pregnant she will take next year off.  When completed she will go to Darwin to practice.  She wishes everyone at the club well.
RSL, Mt Barker

Jack Cooper attended Colin Wagener's 104th birthday last Thursday.  The RSL held a party for him.  His son Paul made the birthday cake which was iced by Colin.  We have not seen Paul of late as Colin can no longer be left alone.  Happy Birthday Colin from all of us.

Guest Speaker, Henry Cowell, St John's
Karen Nolan introduced Henry.  Hills radio donated their defibrillator to our club.  Henry kindly came to check defib and our first aid kits.

Henry has been at St Johns for 6 years.  The RC Murray Bridge 6 defibrillators in the town, one of which was used within 3 days to save someone's life. Henry subsequently met the gentleman concerned who was just turning 70 and will now see a lot of things he may have missed out on if not for that defib.
They are designed to treat a sudden cardiac arrest. You cannot make a mistake when using one.
The survival rate from a cardiac arrest  is under 10% i.e. one in 5 but if CPR is applied in the first 3 minutes the survival rate jumps to 75%.
The defibrillator is mobile and can be taken to different events.
The signs or or symptoms of a cardiac arrest are unresponsiveness and no breathing.
What you must do:
1.  Call an ambulance
2.  Grab the defibrillator
3.  Check Breathing
If no response and no breath proceed with CPR.
If there are any signs of regaining consciousness stop CPR.
Deliver CPR for 2 mins then assess
ACTIVATE de fib.
Remove clothing
Put the pads on bare skin.
The defib will automatically assess.
If the patient is hairy shave them.  There is a safety razor in each defib.
Any CPR is better than nothing.
The compression should be 2 inches  and significant- press firmly.
The pads can be used once only.  The battery will last a few years depending on the make.
Our defib needs a new set of pads and batteries.
The defib has a facial mask and stickers for vans from St John's.

President James donated $200 on behalf of the club to St Johns.
CPR involves chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth (rescue breaths) that help circulate blood and oxygen in the body. This can help keep the brain and vital organs alive.

You should start CPR if a person:

  • is unconscious
  • is not responding to you
  • is not breathing, or is breathing abnormally
An Automated External Defibrillator  Provides CPR Feedback Based on Assessment of Patient.

Distributed the very impressive coding documents produced by Kathy Horn. These documents are made available to the receiving end to assist in assembly.

We need a second Project Manager to assist in recovery of playgrounds as we are getting a lot of interest from councils wanting to donate old playgrounds. Anyone interested please contact Peter Baur or Mark Clemow.

Polio Ute
The BT-50 MAZDA ute will become a gleaming baton for the End Polio Now campaign as it is passed from area to area, where promotional events will be staged to capture media and public attention.

District 9510 will provide the ute and coordinate the concept, with individual areas to arrange their individual events and promotion of the relay within the area. “These events are entirely at the discretion of each staging post, but will aim for maximum club participation, public involvement and media coverage to publicise Rotary’s involvement in eradicating polio worldwide”. While area events may include fundraising, the main fundraiser will be in the form of a raffle, which will run throughout the relay and be drawn at the final stop in Adelaide.
Sergeant Ian Rose fined nearly everyone as usual and made us laugh.

Next week 13th December - Sally Harding will give her "Behind the badge" talk
