Conquer the Summit is a community running event held annually in Mount Barker, offering distance options for all ages and fitness levels.
First held in 2012, the primary purpose of this iconic event is to raise funds for Operation Flinders and other charities supporting local youth. It serves as a major fundraiser for Rotary, in collaboration with Mount Barker Lions and various community sporting groups. About twenty Rotary volunteers are stationed all around the course, to not just show participants the way, but to encourage them on. They also help with the planning, set-up and overall co-ordination on the day. It's lots of fun and a great way to spend a beautiful autumn morning in the Adelaide Hills.
The event kicks off at the Summit Sport and Recreation Park and winds through farming and bushland, following a mix of roadside, fire tracks, vineyard paths, and trails leading to the 514-metre summit of Mount Barker—and back. Quarter marathoners only need to complete the route once, covering 10.5 km, while half marathoners, after returning to the start, must repeat the course to complete their 21 km. For those seeking a gentler challenge, there’s a 5 km course around the Laratinga Wetlands, designed especially for walkers and families.
While the event is both grueling and exhilarating, the real reward comes from the great community spirit and knowing that every drop of sweat helps fund opportunities that improve the lives of young people.
At Rotary, we’re passionate about guiding people toward a better direction in life. Sometimes it's as simple as offering a helping hand or pointing the way, but often it’s through the significant volunteering efforts we contribute to our community. We'd love to have you volunteer with us.
