Building in partnership with Habitat for Humanity

At the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, more than 120 Rotarians spent an afternoon building 75 wall frames in partnership with Habitat for Humanity – enough for almost three houses. Working alongside them was Jonis Walton.

Habitat for Humanity makes sure program participants are ready for homeownership, offering financial education as part of the process. Like all Habitat participants, Walton has an affordable mortgage through the organization, and those mortgage payments are cycled back into the community to help build more Habitat houses.

District Governor's message| October, 2018 - Economic and Community Development Month

Fellow Rotarians,

Our relevance as an organization is directly related to our community involvement. The second object of Rotary pitches us directly to the communities we serve, because that is where Rotary work begins. Each community has its unique needs and concerns, and we have a proven record of addressing them.

When Rotary started on February 23, 1905 on that faithful day in RM 711 of the unity building in downtown Chicago, the basic principle of professional diversity(Classification) was established. Paul Harris-Attorney-AT-Law Silvester Schiele-Coal Dealer Gustavus Loehr-Mining Engineer Hiram Shorey-Merchant Tailor

Rotarians and clubs, should implement strategies in support of

  1. Mentoring young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life
  2. Strengthen the emphasis on vocation and classification in new member recruitment and induction
  3. Focus more attention on business networking with integrity as a means of attracting and mentoring the young generation

WHAT ARE THE FACTS?

  • 1.4 billion people, nearly half of them unemployed-live on less than $1.25 a day.

Rotarians around the world are involved in projects that support investments in people to create measurable and enduring economic improvement in their lives and communities through:

  • Building capacity to support economic growth and reduce poverty
  • Developing opportunities for work
  • Providing scholarships in economic and community development

PROJECT TYPES

  • POVERTY ALLEVIATION-Income generation and marketing
  • LEADERSHIP SKILLS-Education and training

LEVERAGING KNOWLEDGE

  • Rotarian Action Groups (RAGS)-Leverage their expertise in their particular area of interest to support clubs
  • Rotary Community Corps (RCC)-Rotary community corps can offer key insight into the intricacies of the local community and economic market

ROTARY’S IMPACT

  • Number of grants-148
  • Funding-$7.8 million Dollars

Rotarians, let us continue to inspire as we invest in people to create economic improvement in their lives and their communities.

“THE IMPACT BEGINS WITH YOU”
