Guest Speaker:
Bill Green welcomed Rob Horne and Kirsten Fisher from the Horne Family Foundation. Rob provided a timely presentation on PTSD and the work of the Homewood Research Institute (HRI).
In 2018, the Horne family suffered the catastrophic loss of Paul Horne, who was a decorated military veteran and a Detective Inspector with the OPP. Paul lived with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and tragically took his own life. In response to this tragedy, the Horne family collaborated with HRI, a national charity, to transform mental health and addiction services in Canada and around the world by conducting research and developing applications and treatment modalities to address PTSD.
Paul provided an overview of PTSD and its growing prevalence in first responders and frontline health care workers. PTSD affects the whole person, and Paul shared recent research on the impact of PTSD on the brain. There are two main subtypes of PTSD, Emotional Under-modulation and Emotional Over-modulation. Given the different affects, treatment modalities can be geared to each subtype. HRI conducts research and develops practical treatment applications.
Paul spoke about the Horne Family Memorial Fellowship Fund which raises funds to sponsor fellowships for aspiring researchers. The fund is currently approaching its first milestone of $55,000 for its first fellowship opportunity. HRI has many different partners, including Mitacs, which is an organization that a will match donated funds. As an advocate, Paul works to increase awareness of HRI and the importance of funding research and applications to address PTSD.
HRI’s Vision is “No life held back or cut short by mental illness or addiction.” The presentation led to several thoughtful questions by club members.
Rob and Kirsten were thanked by John Rose.
Meeting was adjourned at 1:30.
