Guest Speaker:

  • Dr. Jill Stoddard, Director of Research, Development and Outcomes and Waterloo Region Family and Children Services
  • Dr. Stoddard introduced the club to “The Resilience Project”, a four year evidence based program involving 8 community organizations serving children from 4 to 12 years of age.  She defined resilience as the ability to bounce back and overcome adversities; an “I can” attitude whose motto is “don’t bounce back, bounce forward”.
  • The program is based on reducing the stockpile of problems, identifying turning points and providing opportunities for success.
  • The study identified a number of areas where children 10 – 12 years of age with challenges lack effective developmental influences including:
  • Positive interactions, creative activities, caring neighborhoods, service to others, equity and social justice, positive values and positive identity, and provides support and opportunities to deliver those influences.
  • Initial program funding was by the Lyle Hallman Foundation.
  • Website with additional information and experience videos is at “the resilience project”.
