President Everton arrives in Houston TX for the RI Convention.

Announcements:
 
Wednesday is Alison's Scott's birthday (I hope you are at the meeting Alison, so we can bless you with a song).
 
Don and Anne Wilcox will be celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary on Friday.
 
Friday will also mark Todd Aitchison's 19th year as a member of our club!
 
The first 2022/23 board meeting will be held on Tuesday the 19th - Hosted by yours truly.

Topic: Rotary International Convention
  • Houston TX
  • Convention center had a four lane width sign announcing the conference
  • Over 11K attendees at the conference at the George Bush Convention Center
  • 18 screens to have better visibility of what is happening at the front
  • Very little masks and people were so happy to see each other and be together
  • Top 4 countries for attendance: US, Philippines, Japan, Canada
  • More countries in Rotary than the UN
  • 3 floors of the facility
  • Opening Ceremony: Performance from the winner of the Voice 
  • Celebrating Youth and Girls- opening performance was a dance group from India 
  • Week started off with opening ceremonies and a country themed dinner/evening event. 
  • Everton met Jennifer Jones (President Elect for RI) and Shaker (current President of RI)
  • Everyone who Everton spoke with are facing the same challenges as our club. Drop in membership, fundraising and keeping people engaged. They shared information and ideas together.
  • Day 1 speaker: Michael Collins who was part of the Apollo mission. He was the third man on the moon. He is a Rotarian and is 89 years old. 
  • Main theme was focusing on youth- getting youth involved and keeping Rotary growing.
  • House of Friendship had 200 exhibits to walk through
  • The flag program is very large in the US and Everton found a Rotarian who has technology to run the program that has been shared.
  • Week of Sept 11- Rotary is looking to have clubs have an event to celebrate the community
  • Everton lost his luggage on the flight down
  • District held an event at the top of a hotel
  • Went to the space center and the art center
  • Spent the morning at the convention center doing sessions and then the afternoon would be exploring the city
  • Jennifer Jones spoke- the crowd was engaged and moved by her words. 
  • Breakout group: How can we use data that we collect to improve on our projects? 
  • Last Day- Astros Game
  • 8 cases of Polio left in 2 countries

Graham- any statistics on the spread of covid at the conference?
Answer: Nothing has come out officially
 
Alex- What are the priorities of RI and for our club this upcoming year?
Answer: Imagine Rotary: need to reimagine what Rotary is on the world level and on our club level. How do we grow and prosper?
 
Simon- Were the meals included?
Answer: Organized but some were prepaid or most were on the Rotarian
 
Bill- We are all here by invitation- who invited you into Rotary?
