Guest Speaker – Dr. Michael Stevenson
Dr. Stevenson visited us for the 2nd time. He is the founder of Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre located in the Kitchener Market.
Dr. Stevenson has a unique medical practice dedicated specifically to helping newly landed refugees in the Waterloo Region.
The mission of Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre is to help patients heal from the scars of their past lives, so they can achieve new goals here in Canada and become active and engaged citizens of their community.
As a refugee Doctor, Michael and is colleagues deal with health issues not normally seen in Canada. Tuberculosis, Parasites, Polio and the effects of Malnutrition are quite common at the centre.
But more than health care, the Refugee Centre hires Interpreters and assists patients in getting all of their documentation in order so they can get access to all the help they need to establish themselves here in the Region.
The SRHC now has a over 4000 patients with an additional 600 are on the waiting list.
