February 9 meeting held at Kypreos Restaurant, Kitchener.

President Judy opened the meeting with a Land Acknowledgement

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we live and work today is the land traditionally used by the Hoaudenosaunee, Anishnaabe and Neutral people.  We also acknowledge the enduring presence and deep traditional knowledge, laws and philosphies of the Indigenous people with whom we share this land today.

Club members stand for the invocation.

Guest Speaker:
Detective Mike Payne, Fraud Squad-Waterloo Region Police Service

Detective Payne explained that as a society we’re LOSING the battle against Fraudsters and so much of it is preventable.
Phishing Scams are everywhere and taking over with the biggest being Romance and Investment scams along with CRA scams.
Fraudsters, including a local resident recently busted have set up Identity theft laboratories who make ID’s, cheques and various pieces of ID. FYI those Wallet protectors they sell on infomercials to protect your cards being scanned in airports are themselves a scam…don’t pay more than $20 for one if you really feel they work because they’re not going to do anything.
Tap Payments are now the MOST SECURE form of payment so tap whenever you can for payment.

Ways to safe check to see if your ID is being used:
·        Check credit card/banking statements for suspicious transactions
·        Watch for bills from accounts you don’t have
·        Calls from Fake collection agencies
·        Credit limits that go up without your approval
If you are a victim, things to do right away:
·        Clear your name/change passwords
·        Notify Equifax and the like immediately
·        Regarding Social Media i.e. Facebook/Twitter etc. do the business card test!  If stuff that would appear on your business card is all on your Facebook profile i.e. employer, date of birth, address, where you grew up, went to school etc. then you’re ripe for fraud
·        Avoid using Auto Logins
·        Make sure your online sites are secure HTTPS secure connections
·        If possible always use 2 step verifications
·        Update Anti-Spyware
·        Don’t do any online banking on public Wi-Fi such as Airports

Karin Voisin thanks guest speaker Detective Mike Payne.

"Women in Rotary"
Event held February 8th
The Kitchener Rotary Club hosted the "Women in Rotary" event on February 8th as part of their 100th Anniversary celebrations.  The meeting featured a presentation by Kathy Smith who was one of two of the first women inducted to Rotary in Ontario in 1989.  Pat Talman also joined the Kitchener Club at this time.    Kathy explained how challenging it was to be accepted in her club as there were many obstacles to be surmounted by members who didn't think there was a place for women in Rotary.  She also acknowledged that many others were accepting, and saw that the contribution of women in Rotary would enhance the opportunities for growth and service.  Kathy has held many positions of leadership in her club and in the District, and has paved they way for women to become vital members of their clubs.

Valerie Wafer, Rotary International Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee also spoke about the need to broaden Rotary's vision of its membership.  In a recent worldwide survey done by RI there was a strong message that members wanted more diversity and an expanded view of the profile of a typical member, especially as it relates to leadership in Rotary.  Rather than characterizing  the ideal candidate for membership, we must offer anyone who is interested in joining the opportunity to fit in.   District 7080 has formed a Diversity Equity and Inclusion committee to address this important aspect for our future.

The goal of Rotary International is to have 50% of its membership held by women.  Currently 20% of the total membership is comprised of women.  We are celebrating that incoming RI President Jennifer Jones is a Canadian and will inspire more women to becoming active Rotarians.

The meeting was attended by President Judy, Incoming President Everton, Michelle Burke, Graham Gardiner, Ian Robertson and Karin Voisin.

You know when there is good food offered at an event, you will always find Kelly Strome at the table. Kelly is all smiles as he prepares to enjoy the corned beef sandwich- shaved corn beef served on rye bread, toasted with mustard and served with fries. Kelly dresses ups the fries with a touch of Heinz ketchup! Delicious!!! Kelly will be back.

Mac Graham prepares to "dig" into the Chicken Souvlaki dinner! A single skewer of marinated chicken souvlaki, served with Green salad , roasted potatoes and rice.

A meal fit for a King!

NEXT WEEK’S MEETING IS BACK AT KYPREOS RESTAURANT at 305 Lancaster Street West.  There is parking in the plaza lot to the right of it if you’re looking at the restaurant from the road, and a few spots behind the restaurant or on the side street.  The food is FANTASTIC and Andrea our server is very friendly and organized.  Meeting time going forward will be back to 12pm start time to 1pm – 1:15ish.
