Guest Speaker
As part of our Past President Speaker Series, Graham Gardner, President in 1997-98 spoke to the club. John Rose introduced Graham. Graham provided an interesting review of the activities and accomplishments of the club during his year as President.
Graham travelled to the RI Convention in Scotland where 24,000 people attended. Herb App from our club attended with Graham. Glen Kinross from Australia was RI President. The Rotary theme was "Show Rotary Cares"
When Graham took over as President he explained the club was running "smoothly" and had a good board of Directors. The focus that year was on organizing social events. Events included:
Drayton Festival evening
Ski Day at HoliMont Ski Club in Ellicottville, NY
Fishing Trip to Port Rowan
Indoor Golf Event
Offisite meetings included:
Firehall visit to Highland Station
KidsAbility tour
The club hosted a youth exchange student.
New member inductions- Brad Swanson, John Villemaire, Jack Shoenmaker, Mark Shaver.
The club was involved in Camp Enterprise and RYLA.
Charlie Woods was District Governor and Bruce Mayberry from our club was Assistant DG.
The club made many donations that year including:
$30,000 to the Hospice of Waterloo Region
$25,000 to KidsAbility (which was our regular donation at the time)
$4,000 for a school in Guatamala
Soup Kitchen
Central Ontario Development Riding Program
Fundraising for the year brought in over $120,000
We volunteering at a Bingo Hall every second weekend, raising $40,000-60,000 per year.
The Oktoberfest Luncheon and Crown and Anchor were going strong.
And we had a Duck Race. This event was a great fellowship activity, requiring many volunteer hours to execute. Most importantly, it was a great money maker.
In Graham's year, the Citizen of the year was Don Wilcox.

At the Annual President's Night, Herb App presented Graham with his first (of many) Paul Harris Fellowship awards.
Rotarian of the Year in 1997-98 was Jim Evans. Jim was in charge of Program that year and did a great on weekly program speakers and events.
Graham commented he was honoured and thrilled to be President of the Club. The club enjoyed a very successful year.
