Guest Speaker

Cristina Vanin - Professor of Theology at St Jerome’s University at the University of Waterloo.

  • She came to talk to us about the St John’s Bible.  This Bible was commissioned by a Catholic order in Minnesota by the St John’s Abbey.  There hasn’t been a bible hand written in the past 500yrs and so St Johns Abbey was approached by a  historian named Donald Jackson to take on this project to hand write a Bible and hand illustrate a Bible with the intent that it would be written for the present and future in mind not how it would be written as part of the past.

  • The Bible pages are made of cat skin and many other of the techniques that were used 500 yrs ago were also used in the production of this Bible.  Every page was hand written and each drawing was also done by hand.  It took 7 calligraphers and 8 artists to complete the 7 books that make up the St John’s Bible.  They calligraphers used 3 different kinds of quills, Chinese ink and real gold leaf in the writing of the book.  Each page took 12 hours to hand write by the calligraphers.

  • There were 299 “Heritage Additions” produced so 7 books make up one complete bible.  Each of the books would cost approx. $125,000 US.  You can view the St John’s Bible (7 Books) at St Jerome’s University as they are currently there on display.
