Guest Speaker

Alan Chalmers of Forbes Motors and Kiwanis

  • Alan moved to Canada in 1968 and his plan was to stay 2 years, get rich and move home to Scotland.
  • He came to be a Cartographer (making maps) but ended up finding work as a car salesman at Drumbo Motors in downtown Toronto.
  • Within 3 short years he had made it to the position of Sales Manager.  One of the requirements was that he join Kiwanis which at that time met every Wednesday for lunch at the Royal York Hotel.
  • In no time he was volunteering with the club and it was on a special trip to Toronto Island with disabled children that he really fell in love with volunteering and helping children.
  • He is a 40 plus year member of Kiwanis today and past president of the Kitchener Club.  He joined the Kitchener Club after moving here in 1979 to help  the Stedlebauer Family start their car dealership.
  • Kiwanis was founded in 1915 in Detroit.  It’s second chapter was in Hamilton ON in 1916.  They first had the motto “We Build” which is the translation of the word Kiwanis.  But later, it was changed to “Serving the Children of the World”.
  • Kiwanis ran its own Summer camp on Paradise lake from the 1950’s through the 1980’s
  • The have long been involved the Kiwanis Music festival since 1954.
  • They have worked with Nutrition For Learning and now Food for Kids
  • They raise funds in various ways like the 100 Holes of Golf Fundraiser, and now with Cash Calendar.
  • Alan continues to work 2 or 3 days a week and is an active member of his Kiwanis club.

Graham announced that today was Green Shirt Day in honour of the young hockey players killed in that horrible bus accident in Saskatchewan. A young man had signed the donor card and eight lives were changed because of his generosity.

Graham, a double-lung transplant recipient encouraged all to go to www.beadonor.ca to sign up.
