Guest Speaker:

Art Sinclair – Greater Waterloo Region Chamber of Commerce

  • Art is a proud member of the Waterloo Rotary Club and spoke to us about the Chamber of Commerce and the upcoming Federal Election. To open Art shared a quote from former Prime Minister Kim Campbell - “Election campaigns are not the time to discuss the issues”.This didn’t end well for Campbell in the 1993 federal elections.

  • Art provided background on the Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber has 1600 Members from all sectors.  The chamber operates as a  Public Not for Profit Organization.  They are advocates for community interests, health care, doctor recruitment, transit, education among many other interests.

  • Art spoke about how Chambers of Commerce starting at the top being the Canadian Chamber of Commerce help to ensure topics are forefront during federal elections.  They focus on matters such as employment levels, housing costs and taxes and how these are impacted by political decisions and can sway voters political support.

  • The Canadian Chamber has requested a Royal Commission Review of the federal taxation system.  There have not been any major changes to the federal taxation system since the 1960’s.  The Canadian Chamber through the requested Royal Commission would like to see an objective, fair and simplified federal taxation system.

  • Issues such as Healthcare and Pharmacare are always top of voters minds.  One recent poll suggested most voters are concerned about healthcare, but didn’t trust any one party to fix the problems.

  • Locally the Greater KW Chamber (and local voters) are interested in matters such as infrastructure (Highway 7, two-way -all day Go trains), housing costs, employment levels among other matters.

  • Art closed his presentation with some fond words about Leo Tobi and his impact on the community.  Art laughed that the Chamber folks were certain Leo had a twin, as there was no way one guy could be so involved in so many events in Waterloo Region.  He is sure Leo was in almost every issue of Snapped KW taking part in one local event or another.

  • Ian Robertson thanked Art on behalf of the club.
