Lunch meeting was held at Concordia Club on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.
We were joined by a visiting Rotarian Doug Vincent from the Woodstock-Oxford Club.
Our 50/50 prize continues to grow as Todd, Alex, and our Guest Speaker Dr. Nik K. all failed to find the winning marble.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Nikhi Koushik. – Child Psychologist at Grand River Hospital
Dr. Nik opened his presentation by sharing that his Mom is a past Rotary District Governor of District 6400 and that he will be joining her on a Rotary Based trip at the end of May to India.
Dr. Nik shared stories of the benefits of Psycho Educational Assessment. Often children will act with behavioural or emotional outbursts as a result of undiagnosed issues. In one story that Dr. Nik shared a young girl was having breakdowns and outburst that were drastically reduced after identifying that she was struggling with dyslexia. The dyslexia was causing her frustration in not progressing at the pace of her class mates and this was leading to the outbursts. A modified learning plan was implemented and helped to find a program for her to succeed. Dr. Nik shared other similar stories and walked us through is general approach of diagnosing psychological issues which can’t be found though scans or x-rays or blood work. It is all based on assessment and experience.
Following Dr. Nik’s presentation there was a great discussion about the need for additional funding through OHIP to support more assessments to support more children. One way Dr. Nik suggested that we as Rotarian’s could help was though volunteering in programs such as Strong Start – Early Reading Assessments in grade schools.
Alex thanked Dr. Nik with the gift of Operation Eye Sight.
