Guest Speaker:

Maggie McMurray - Trillium Gift of Life Group

  • Worked there since 2003- Organ and Tissue Donor Coordinator
  • Low survival rate and very sick people that she usually works with.
  • Myths and Misconceptions of Organ Donations: Wallet Cards - hospitals will usually not look for them.  Make sure you are registered on their site!
  • She works on the donor side and not the recipient side - they keep it separate.  Hospital doesn’t want family speaking to organ donor as it changes their decision.
  • In 2015 - 269 Organs were donated in Ontario
  • In 2016- 351 Organs were donated in Ontario (to put in perspective there were over 300,000 deaths)
  • This makes organ donation a rare occurrence.
  • There is only a 32% sign up rate in Canada for Organ Donation (In Ontario we are slightly over 40%)
  • -1527 people are currently on a list for organ donations (mostly kidneys, which you could wait up to 7 years for one)
  • Cancer is an automatic exclusion if you’ve had it within the last 5 years
  • Hospital can keep a body “alive” even if already brain dead for a long period of time in order to preserve the organs.
