Drugs and Firearms
-they are proactive in their approach-look for offenders and target them
-Investigations can begin from different sources including confidential informants, Crime Stoppers, other agencies such as the RCMP, CSIS
-focus on Joint projects- that overlap with other forces
-Surveillance-makes up 80% of what they do, this includes tracking vehicles, watching people, tapping phones
-Common controlled substances they target include Cocaine, crack cocaine, Fentanyl, Crystal meth, magic mushrooms
-Fentanyl-a manufactured drug from China and Mexico, comes in the form of a fine white powder resembling icing sugar, Pills can take on any shape or style
Firearms Investigations-takes up 50% of their time
-investigate trafficking firearms and weapons
-the numbers for gun violence in the region are down vs last year
-90% of the guns come from the USA
-Youth Gun violence is on the rise, guns used to intimidate people
-not possible to stop guns from coming across the border
-police will trace guns to determine where they are coming from
Questions
Informants-Why do they do what they do? -they will be paid a small amount by the police, or could receive leniency if on a criminal charge
Surveillance-there is no typical day, can be boring and involve travel
US Drug Enforcement -they are more efficient, there is less red tape to get permission to track people
