Trevor Eaton Director, Engagement-WRHN
-Trevor is a member of the Kitchener-Conestoga Rotary Club
-He provided an update on the WRHN
-WRHN supports a wide area including Perth, Bruce and Wellington
-they were over 142,000 emergency visits last year, well over capacity, 40% of which could have been dealt with by family doctors. The shortage of family physicians is putting pressure on their resources. More patients having more complex needs is creating a strain on the system.
-over 19,500 surgeries were performed last year.
-volunteers are crucial for the hospitals with over 65,000 volunteer hour received yearly
-April 1, 2025 saw the merger and creation of the WRHN
-They continually work to do a better job offloading patients who come in by ambulance, have had success in decreasing wait times.
-a question was asked about seniors and hospital visits/stays- they are working on a program to have seniors sent home as quick as possible with an acute car nurse coming to the home to see patients as well as homecare support.
-A new acute hospital is being planned, the location will be at the David Johnston Research and Technology Park at the University of Waterloo, a 52 acre site off Bearinger Road, they are looking to build 454 beds at the new hospital, the construction will be done over several phases. In addition, the existing hospitals will be renovated. The community will be responsible to pay for the equipment in the hospital. Funding will be providing by the Provincial government as well as local government.
