Everton introduced two guests to the meeting-Simon Fallows and David Tubbs

 

 

John Thompson provided an update on “Rotary Meets”- John reminded members the program is running for the months of January, February and March. Members are encouraged to get together with a fellow Rotarian. 

 

Karin Voisin has booked Tuesday March 28 for a “Games Night” at Waterpark Place. More details to follow.

 

Michelle Burke reminded members of the upcoming ski day happening next week. In March, there are plans for a Golfplay event. More details coming.

 

Last week our club participated in a successful 5 club event with the District Governor.

 

Update on Catch the Ace-The last Catch the Ace raised approximately $65,000-70,000 for KidsAbility. It has been decided to pursue a 50/50 event every quarter to replace Catch the Ace. It will be an online format. An email will be sent next week.

 

50/50- with a jackpot of $12.50, Judy Nairn, Paul Puopolo and Karin Voisin were unsuccessful.

 

Trivia time- For the “Spirit of Giving”-What year did Karin Voisin assume responsibility of this event and include our club?  Mac Graham was correct with his answer of 2005.

“Revolution”

We have seen a revolution lately in the work of work.

“What is happening?”-since Covid the “work world” turned upside down. We are in challenging times and people are worried. 

 

For Business

-need to be more efficient, there is increased risk, have had an electronic shift.

-we now have an elastic workforce- working from home, there is a management shift, older knowledge is being replaced quickly.

 

For Individuals

-people want to work from home, hybrid work.

-expect greater benefits, this is the age of the entrepreneur, GIG economy, people are leaving certain industries such as Hospitality.

-people are changing jobs more, want better work/life balance, they do not want to return to the office.

 

Employee Expectations

-flexibility, more time off, greater vacation time, better benefits, better assistance plans for legal, mental health etc., want a nice physical work environment.

 

-People are disengaged, it is becoming increasing difficult for employers to engage people.”

-“Quite quitting”- people are just doing their jobs, nothing more. Warning signs-decrease in performance, late for work, increased sick days.

 

What can Employers do? -STOP/LOOK/LISTEN

 

Questions- How robust is your culture? How do you treat employees? Keep competitive, the work environment matters more than ever and will make a difference.

-understand how people are feeling, find out why they leave with exit interviews

-people was feedback.

 

Manage your poor performers- don’t tolerate them too long, other staff are watching.

- “Cultural Vampires”- not visible, convert others, drain the energy from your people.

- “Cultural Saints”- are great staff, deliver results.

-If you don’t look after your demons, you lose your saints/angels.

 

Build your engagement plan-support your managers and supervisors- keep communicating to keep people engaged.

 

Where has the talent gone?

-Canada not bringing in enough people to the country.- it’s an employee’s market.

 

Finding Talent-when hiring outline ALL the benefits of your company.

-people respond to text messages faster- with a text they feel they have an obligation to respond, with Email -it’s easy to avoid answering-use text when reaching out to potential employees.

 

Are there calm seas ahead? -things will get better, we will adapt to all the changes, employers need to be sharper at their game.

 

Be curious, never say never, keep learning, cherish your networks.
