Guest Speaker:

Cavell Johnson, Head coach of the KW Titans

  • With the KW Titans set to begin their third season in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC), Head Coach Cavell Johnson is looking to build on the culture he established when he took over the role last February.

  • A native of Delaplane, Virginia, Cavell is a graduate of Virginia University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) – a Division 1 school in NCAA. In fact, he was a member of the first UMBC men's basketball team in school history to reach the "March Madness" tournament.

  • Prior to joining the Titans as a player for their inaugural season in 2016/17, Cavell played all over the world – with stops in Portugal, Finland, Hungary, China and Greece. He also played in the NBLC with the former Orangeville A’s, where he was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, two-time All-Defensive Team member and Slam Dunk Champion.

  • Coach Cavell was a day away from joining the US army, before receiving a call from the previous Titans coach to return to the team as a veteran player, as the team needed veteran leadership. After playing in three games the ownership of the team offered him the interim head coach position and in April of this year was named the permanent head coach.

  • Coach Johnson loves our community and is the key reason he returned. He is working on spreading his initiative throughout the community called BRAND (Building Reputation and Nurturing Development). It doesn’t cost us anything to spread kindness. This was how he was raised and is a part of him, and feels by spreading this throughout the community, it will benefit us all. This mentality is was one of the factors he looked for in the players he selected for the KW team. The players need to have the basketball skills and the mindset of community.

In other news...

There was a Lakers fan with a really crappy seat at Staples Center. Looking around, he spotted an empty seat at half-court. Thinking to himself "what a waste", he made his way down to the empty seat.

When he arrived at the seat, he asked the man sitting next to it, "Is this seat taken?" The man replied, "This is my wife's seat. She passed away. She was a big Lakers fan. The other man replied, " I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. May I ask why you didn't give the ticket to a friend or relative?"

The man replied, "They're all at the funeral."
