Remembering John Sever, a leader in polio eradication
John Sever, an infectious disease specialist and leader in Rotary’s polio eradication program, died on 25 April. He was 92.
It was on Sever’s recommendation in 1979 that Rotary embarked on its decades of efforts to eradicate polio globally, expanding what began as a vaccination campaign in the Philippines. Sever brought his expertise and advocacy to the International PolioPlus Committee from its inception in 1994 and was a member and vice chair. His tireless efforts were instrumental in directing the global campaign to eradicate polio.
