12:50 – Mac introduced our Guest speaker DGE Sandhya Maini

She is from the Rotary club of Burlington North. She is a director of HR at Sunlife.  She is a UW Grad.

Sandhya spoke about club visioning and how the district provides resources and trainers to help those clubs who choose to participate in a club visioning exercise.
She explained why there is a need for this.

Organizations such as Rotary can suffer from a lack of continuity, consistency and consensus when there is a turn over of people and positions every year.

A defined vision can assist clubs through difficult times such as the pandemic
Sandhya invited the members to ask questions throughout her presentation and a spirited discussion ensued.

Paul P. asked what our club vision is?

President Elect Everton noted that the club doesn’t have a defined vision and it was one of the reasons he invited DGE Sandhya to present on the topic and to describe the resources and trainers available to the Rotary clubs.

Don noted that he and Chuck are charter members of the club and he observed that 17 of the honorary members are Past Presidents.  That is a lot of experience sitting on the sidelines.  He suggested that the club should try to engage the PP and utilize some of that knowledge and experience.

He also suggested that the 5 clubs in the region should do more together.

Sandhya then went on to explain the 4 elements of Club Vitality
  • Vision
  • Relationships
  • Projects
  • Management

                                                Time

Sandhya explained how organizations such as a Rotary club go through stages depicted in the chart above.

At the start of the organization the bottom left of the curve Vision is there but no relationships, projects or management.  Represented by the capital V and the lower case r,p and m

The next phase as you go up the curve relationships are built Capital R, then projects capital P then Management.

The Y Axis is the health and the X axis is time.

As the peak of the curve the organization has all 4 attributes and is running well.
The first to go is the vision. You lose focus, you continue to have relationships, you continue to do projects and the management continues to function.
As time progresses you lose relationships, projects fizzle out and eventually management fails.

She then asked the members where they thought our club was on the chart.
All agreed it was on the downward right side.  The optimistic said between 1 and 2 the others said between 2 and 3.

We all agreed that Sandhya presentation gave us a lot to think about.
PE Everton indicated that he would be pursuing the matter with the board and the club in the near future and was heartened by the feed back from the club members.

Rotarian Alison thanked our Guest speaker for her timely and informative presentation and presented her with a certificate indicated that a person’s eyesight had been restored in her honour for taking the time to be with us today.
